BEST insurance for hiking, skiing?

DS is going to Bulgaria skiing and hiking then a few months after another trip to Norway mainly exploring, hiking, climbing etc.
Anyone have an recommendations for a good fully covered travel insurance? Im guessing an annual policy rather than 2 separate would be best.

An annual policy is more cost effective and usually not massively more expensive than a single trip policy. Mine is an NFU Mutual bespoke policy, which specifically covers winter sports, motor sport, horse riding, and wild camping. I pay about £350 a year which is good value considering I generally go on anywhere between 10-20 trips abroad including several to the US. He just needs to make sure that it definitely covers the activities he’s going to be engaging in, the counties he’ll be travelling to, and a high enough policy limit that it will cover things like having to be airlifted - £10 million is a decent level, especially for any US travel, though £5 million sufficient if he won’t be travelling to the US.

Edited to add: make sure DS reads his policy terms carefully and understands when he will and won’t be covered. It’s relatively common, for example, for winter sports policies to have specific exclusions if e.g. you chose to ski in a weather warning, or against the advice of resort staff. Most will also try to exclude any injury which occurred whilst you were under the influence of alcohol: a lot of skiers have a boozy hot chocolate or two or a couple of beers when they break, and it’s important to be aware not to get too tipsy.

I get mine through my bank and it covers ski trips. I pay £16 a month for holiday insurance, phone insurance, AA cover and home emergency cover. The holiday insurance covers me dh and dc. Insurance is with Aviva

CornishTeaTime · 24/01/2025 11:27

I saw Aviva had good reviews when I did a search. As he will be walking, hiking, climbing mountains etc he needs to be fully covered for every eventuality!!!

Columbus are good for activity holidays. They paid out without quibble when we had a diving holiday booked where DP was diagnosed with a health condition that meant he couldn't dive.

Just make sure he reads the T&Cs carefully as all companies categorise activities differently and have different definitions and altitude limits for hiking/climbing etc. Or might have requirements where you're only covered if you're with a professional guide.

Yes, check altitude limits. Lots only cover up to 4000m and depending on what he's doing, some peaks exceed that.

Also with skiing, check for off-piste cover... even if they have an incident right next to the slope, if it's outside of the piste markers, it may be labelled 'off piste' by the rescuers (as we found out recently but fortunately with the relevant cover).

Yes he'll go through ts and cs
