Help! Neighbours' security light is ridiculously bright in the night!

A block of flats across the road has just installed security lights with motion sensors and it's blinding! I have basically daytime during the night and I can't sleep...
But I have absolutely no idea what to do, because it's a block of flat. How do I find the landlord? Or if I need to go directly to the council, how can I do that?

Blackout curtains are your friend.

If council flats go to the council, if private find the building management company, and in the meantime try some blackout curtains or blinds to help. Or an eye mask

I already have blackout curtains (and good ones)! But those lights are just too ridiculous, there is so much light around the edges of the curtains! 🫠
I imagine I'll find de details of the management company inside the building?

A well fitted blackout blind in the window recess.

The best blackout blinds are bloc blinds. But I'd try find out more about the flats and who manages them and try get it removed.

Fit a recessed blackout blind behind those curtains and the combination the two together should fix the issue.

For true black out, you need a blind and curtains. I wouldn’t bother trying to get the block of flats to change the lights, as I doubt they will do that. Save yourself the anger and the hassle and get a black blind. Fit it in the inside, so it’s flush, make sure it’s a blind that goes end to end and not one with plastic on the edges that are about 2-3cm thick, or light will come through the edges.

Catapult and marbles

Look at your council website to see if they have an environmental team and if light pollution is something they can help with. When this happened to us, we submitted a form on the council website with photos and they dealt with it. The light is still there but it got switched with another model and it's much more bearable.

Buy a black silk eye mask. They're very soft. I love mine now and can't sleep without it.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 24/01/2025 07:25

The light may just need to be slightly adjusted in angle and that can make a huge difference. Also in terms of how sensitive it is and how long it stays on for. I'd try the management company first and then the council.

To completely block out any light you need more than blackout curtains. The best thing is a cassette blind which has side channels that the blind edges are encased in. An example of this would be Bloc blinds although there are others. My friend is a shift worker so often has to sleep in the day and has this blind.
