How to fail an interview (I was one of the interviewers)

Hairisbad · 23/01/2025 21:32

We advertised for bar staff at our local social club. This was for weekends when we have parties on. This person failed as soon as he came in the room.
Drunk or drugged up.
Told me I'm over the hill for bar work. And I'm not busty enough. I am on the committee and wouldn't know how to pull a pint properly.
The club is not first choice for people booking events. We are booked every weekend until September.
He could put us on the map as if he worked there they would come just to see him.

There were 2 of us interviewing and didn't dare look at each other.

Probably needed to tick a box to get his benefits.

MrsJHernandez · 24/01/2025 00:21

OMG the nerve! I'm not sure many people would employ someone that full of themselves. The only reason people would come to see him is to check if the rumours of his ridiculousness are true.

You need to up your CV filtering game. Or do you just have people walk in off the street to you?

Absolutely. I wish you'd offered him the job, would've pissed him right off?

minipie · 24/01/2025 00:30

Right out of Trainspotting

JC03745 · 24/01/2025 00:35

I'm not sure if you are asking for other funny interview stories, or not? Anyways, here goes.

-I previously worked somewhere requiring a high security clearance and we needed a copy of a passport/ID etc when people came onsite. Out came a little bag of drugs from their passport when admin opened it- prior to their job interview!

-I was interviewing on a panel. The 1st thing this woman said, was how she'd taken a previous company to a tribunal for discrimination because she didn't get the job. She wanted to strongly warn us of this fact! This was before we'd asked any interview questions and had only asked how her journey had been to get to us 😕

I had a woman once shout all her answers in an interview. She was so loud.

What she was saying was decent but she was far too noisy to share an office with us.

Are you joking? What does “from a certain ethnic background” have to do with anything? They dodged a bullet with you.

dysonwithdeath · 24/01/2025 08:00

"He could put us on the map as if he worked there they would come just to see him"

He's not wrong!

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 24/01/2025 08:02

@GreatAunt26 wow, wait to get your arse handed to you on here. Ethnicity? Let me guess, you are in USA if it's such a crime to take your annual leave.

An obvious box-ticking young man who literally laid over the desk and drawled one word answers at us.

A woman who slagged off all her previous employers.

A woman, who on being asked to do a very basic IT test, said she couldn't use a PC she wasn't used to, and walked out.

A man who, being interviewed for an audit role, told us all about the clever ways he fiddled them to ensure a good result every time.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 24/01/2025 08:05

😂😂 reminds me of my days hiring in retail. Highlights included:

'Oh I noticed the ad mentioned evenings and weekends, but I have a family so I'm assuming I could do Mon-Fri 9-2:30? Surely the weekend shifts are covered by people with no responsibilities.'

A woman showing up for an interview as a delivery driver (which needs 1yr driving experience/clean licence) WHO HADN'T YET PASSED HER TEST

Multiple people clearly trying to tank the interview to prove to UC/parents they were trying to find work (who actively mentioned this!)

One I felt most sorry for was a woman in her 50s being made redundant from her WFH job with clearly limited mobility, trying to feebly convince me for 20 minutes straight she'd be great at loading vans/lifting heavy items for 8 hours a day. Eventually she just broke down crying about how she didn't know what to do.

Agree, @GreatAunt26 you wouldn’t be on an interview panel in my workplace …. in fact you wouldn’t have a job for very long in my workplace with that mindset.

Are you openly racist in life or just when hiding behind a keyboard on an anonymous forum?

fromthevault · 24/01/2025 08:12

@GreatAunt26 wtf?

A) what's wrong with taking all of your allocated annual leave?

B) 'a certain ethnic background'????

RampantIvy · 24/01/2025 08:16

DD recently left her job in a pharmacy and the manager asked her to look through the CVs of applicants to replace her.

She said that most of them were woefully inadequate - badly laid out, terrible spelling, phone screenshot etc.

Is this kind of thing not taught at school?

What is wrong with 'taking every single day of holiday entitlement'? Are you in America?

Schoolchoicesucks · 24/01/2025 08:20

Imagine taking every single day of your allocated holiday! What a cheeky fucker!
🙄
Are we meant to know what ethnic minority the 3 unsuitable women were from? Or is it a dog whistle so that we'd only know if we were primed to recognise it?

PearlClutzsche · 24/01/2025 08:24

Over the next year he took every single day of holiday entitlement

Imagine taking something you’re entitled to! What a cheeky fucker.

@GreatAunt26 Not just a certain ethnic background but one that's aggressive?

You don't belong in the workforce, let alone on an interview panel you racist.

How dare he take the leave he's entitled too!!

As for 'ethnic minorities' I have no words.

Jellycatspyjamas · 24/01/2025 08:28

We had 3 female candidates from a certain ethnic background. 2 were clearly not suitable and the 3rd totally had her own agenda

And their sex and ethnic background matters because? There’s a good body of evidence that women from “certain” ethnic backgrounds are more likely to be viewed as aggressive when behaving in the same way as their white counterparts. You’d not be in a job in my workplace, for good reason.

Phthia · 24/01/2025 08:38

Candidate for a teaching job with specific responsibility for early years. On paper, her application was perfect and ticked every box. During the interview, she seemed bored to death. When asked a specific question about early years teaching, she just sighed and didn't say anything more. We really couldn't understand why she had applied, let alone turned up for the interview, as she clearly wasn't interested in the job.

cantthinkofausername26 · 24/01/2025 08:41

Ahh so that's how you keep getting your benefits!

No, it isn't taught in school.

Exam results are important.

We help the kids with their personal statements for college, and their sixth form applications.

They're expected to be in education until 18 so we don't do CVs or indeed much work related stuff any more.

Apart from the phone call, none of your examples reflect badly on the candidate/employee and they highlight your prejudice. Taking holiday is not inappropriate. Sick leave, if in line with policy, is also necessary at times. A pale green suit - so what? 'A certain ethnic background' - I have no words.
