Coverless Duvets - how on earth do you wash and dry them?

Especially the King Size ones and if you don't have a tumble dryer.

Having googled, one site said you only need to wash them every 2-3 months which sounds minging.

What am I missing here?

No way 2-3m . Max I'd leave is 2 weeks. I'm ott though.

Can it be hung on the line to mostly dry then radiators. Have 2 to rotate.

dementedpixie · 23/01/2025 19:49

Do you have any of those washing machine/tumble dryers in a petrol station/at corner shops near you? I have used them to dry a duvet i couldn't dry at home

InTheRainOnATrain · 23/01/2025 19:49

Flat sheet between you and the duvet presumably, as in common in hotels or in America, and then you wash that weekly.

I LOVE mine as does the entire family.

I have two sets so I can wash one set snd replace with other. No tumble dryer but they do dry quickly!

bigkahunaburger · 23/01/2025 19:50

I was my king sizes in a normal (7kg) washing machine. In winter it is flung over the banister and dries in a day (I dont know how its like magic). And in summer it takes an hour. I dont use my tumbler for them.
I wash mine every 2-3 weeks. Ive had them (I have several) for couple of years and they still look like new. They are amazing! I wrestle with duvet covers so they are a godsend to me.

It’s a step backwards.

This is what I do.

if I wash mine in the morning and hang it over the bannister, it’ll be dry in time for bed.

It’s a step backwards.

Not if your dyspraxic (like me) or have issues with your hands, like arthritis, which can make putting on duvets really hard.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/01/2025 19:54

I asked this question elsewhere. I don't think they are for me as I have no tumble drier and nowhere to really dry inside hung up - and one of my biggest horrors is that sour smell of 'indoor improperly dried stuff'. With duvet covers I can get them dry on the heated airer if I have to, but I'm not sure an entire duvet would dry in half a day? Happy to be corrected on that.

Needanewnameidea · 23/01/2025 19:55

I assume they’re used with a regularly laundered top sheet if they’re going for 2-3 months. But I have no interest in having one, I’d rather just change a cover than have to wash the whole thing - I like a thick 12-15 tog so anything over a single wouldn’t fit in my washer and I couldn’t be bothered with a laundrette very often.

bigkahunaburger · 23/01/2025 19:55

I throw mine over the doors, or banister. If I washed first thing, they could be ready by that night even in winter. Never noticed any smells tbh.

You could definately put them over the heated airer.

KarlaKK · 23/01/2025 19:56

I want one of these but worry about getting it in the washing machine. I have thought of getting lighter tog ones and singles and having a number of them to layer up and make it easier to wash them. In some countries in Europe they use singles on double beds and I quite like that idea. I'm struggling dealing with duvet covers.

Luminousalumnus · 23/01/2025 19:57

Wash it, spin it twice, tbh it's dry to the touch just like that, then air over the bannister for a few hours. It's quite synthetic though, not down, but dries really quickly - I much prefer it and as it's so easy, I wash it much more often

DGPP · 23/01/2025 20:00

They are horrible, you get so sick of washing them and having to dry this great big thing. I’ve gone back to duvets with covers

bigkahunaburger · 23/01/2025 20:01

Mine are 10.5 tog, king and all fit in to 7kg washing machine, and dry over the course of a day. HTH.

PigInAHouse · 23/01/2025 20:02

It’s a step backwards.

Not if you prefer them to duvets with covers.

KittenPause · 23/01/2025 20:03

They're polyester so they're hot and sweaty and horrible to have as a permanent duvet plus no good if you have any skin conditions like eczema etc

Brombat · 23/01/2025 20:05

Wash in the machine, lob over the heated airer or outside. Dries really quickly.

I really like mine, tho it's a 3rd duvet on my bed, mainly for the dog but it's a very good thing.

That’s what I do! Into the washing machine, over the bannister then it’s dry by bed time.

KirriIrry · 23/01/2025 20:07

I wash mine weekly - put it in first thing, hang over the banister and it’s dry in a few hours. I can wash and dry two in a day no problem.

Isobel201 · 23/01/2025 20:31

I wash mine in my mum's washing machine. Unless I spill something on it which is very rare, it doesn't really get dirty and soiled all that frequently. I only have a 5kg machine atm, but I'm waiting until it breaks before I buy a new 10kg one.

Doggymummar · 23/01/2025 20:40

They come out the machine nearly dry.

mrsm43s · 23/01/2025 20:42

I've got a really good idea! Why not fashion a protective bag for them out of a top sheet and a bottom sheet sewn together, maybe with an opening with poppers or buttons one end. Then, rather than having to wash and dry the whole duvet, you could just change the bag, or shall we call it cover, which would be much easier and quicker to wash and dry. And you could have it in fabric that matched the pillowcases too! You could even have a spare set to make life easier!
