I don't own a lot of stuff. Should I just move house myself?

2 DC will be at school.

I need moving a king size bed/mattress, single bed/mattress, two sets of solid drawers, and 3 ikea trofast units and a kitchen table/chairs

My DIY man is taking my washing machine and installing it all again. And my dishwasher too.

Fridge freezer will be delivered to house next day (new).

I can pack my entire wardrobe into a suitcase.

DC too. Then it's just about 2 bags of toys, their clothes, and the contents of my bathroom storage cupboard and the bathroom itself, which I will fit into my bag because it'll all fit into one bag!
Towels obviously separate to that

The kitchen contents could fit into two large boxes

What would you expect to pay for this?

My wardrobe is being done again by my DIY man

He hasn't got a van big enough to fit everything so that's why I can't use him for it all, otherwise I would

Contents of shed being moved on a different day

Nothing in loft beyond a Christmas tree and small box of decs

So who besides you is going to get a king size mattress and bed out of the house and into a vehicle which needs to be larger than a tradesman’s van?

ThejoyofNC · 23/01/2025 14:23

How do you intend to move a king size bed yourself?

lettingsitallbeagain · 23/01/2025 14:25

Sorry, my OP really wasn't clear

I meant myself as in hiring just a man with a large van who can help me load and unload in one trip

It's 15 mins up the road

We’ve used a “man with a van” for probably £200 when not moving far

Aussiegold · 23/01/2025 14:36

Just make sure your man with a van will help you load and unload, something an 8 months pregnant friend found out to her cost.

Hey I'm following I don't have the answer but as I'm currently In Exact same position being quoted stupid prices and the council who im moving from temp to pernament currently have 0 funding so need to get all white goods and objects when I move and nervous on funds when there (fleeing domestic violence before anyone judges been completely unable to work or set myself up) so just trying to penny pinch where I can.. I think it's doable just need to find help for things like someone carrying tv and bed and wardrobe with me as I can not lift myself

Portakalkedi · 23/01/2025 14:47

Yes, man with a van would be much cheaper. I once moved by Parcel Force (no furniture though) as it was cheaper.

PercyFone · 23/01/2025 14:49

Yep we did that. One super strong man and a Luton van, and we were all sorted.

Mother in law recently did similar - she paid around £50 an hour for a van and two men for a 10 minutes up the road move. They did her whole house in three hours in total (around four trips) but could have dodne it quicker if she had been more organised. Having two men was key - they are obviously much quicker and meant she didnt have to help at all. Make sure you book one from the local area and not just a random person advertising on the internet.
