'Take in' some ironing!

Name-changed for this post. I know it is a well worn cliché on MN to suggest ‘taking in ironing’ when someone needs to make extra money. However this is exactly what I’m thinking of doing! I need to make/save as much money as possible in next 12 months towards a house deposit. I don’t mind ironing and think I’m pretty good at it. I just need to think through a few aspects of it and would appreciate some input please. I live in a relatively affluent part of the SE of England; what would a reasonable charge be? (until recently we had a cleaner who charges £16 per hour for context). Would it be best to charge by item or by the hour? If I offer to collect and deliver in local area could I charge an extra fee for this? I work 4 days per week, so would have Monday to Weds evenings, and all day Friday and weekends to iron. How fast a turnaround would people expect? I will look in to getting insurance in case an item of clothing was damaged etc. I plan to set up a facebook page and advertise via local community groups but with a business name, rather than my own name (partly because I feel slightly embarrassed as I know lots of people in the area, and particularly don’t want my recent cleaner/ironing lady to see that I’m setting up in competition with her). Any genius idea’s for names? The best I’ve come up with is ‘The Iron Lady’… Thanks. Any insights appreciated.

For me, I'd offer one price including collection/drop off with a reasonable allowance for mileage, and would allow drop off or collection from yours also. It depends where you live though!

I'd price it by job, rather than by hour - up to 5 tops or shirts for x, 10 for y.

Then any efficiencies you achieve are your own profit.

Turnaround - I'd focus on a weekend service. Collect Saturday, delivery late Sunday. People too busy to iron are likely to be too busy to faff around having shirts ready in the week.

My DB had an ironing lady who used to charge by weight. I used to think of her - at the time I had many little baby dresses - fiddly to iron - and wonder whether she just did it for shirts and duvet covers!

I used to have an ironing lady she charged by weight.

Maybe 40 pounds for an Ikea bag?

South east.
She did pick up and drop off as well.

Bigfellabamboo · 22/01/2025 16:34

Id charge for set amounts, say 5 shirts for x amount or a basket for x amount.
Id expect turn around of maybe 3/4 days? But you could also offer quicker turn around for higher price.
Offer to collect or drop off as extra price.

Are there any others near you, do a bit of comparison work.

What about Crease Monkey as a name?

I've googled to check Grease Monkey isn't slang for something terrible

Does LaundryHeap cover your area? Have a look at how they price.

The Board Housewife.

I once paid someone to come to my house and do ironing, and she was here for an hour and twenty minutes and when I went to see how she was doing she had done one shirt 😂 For £20!!

So I think charging per item is better.

Names- Iron Maiden is great. Pressed for Time? Smooth Operator? I'm afraid Crease Monkey makes me think the clothes are going to end up greasy.

Ive seen an Iron Maiden out her van! Top name.

I’d like to throw in Pressing Deadlines

ScampiLady · 22/01/2025 17:00

A family member had his shirts ironed and it was a £1 a shirt. This was before CLC not sure what they charge now.

I've got a Fastpress which makes normal ironing much quicker with less strain. Use my conventional iron for shirts.

PizzaPunk · 22/01/2025 17:06

You need to research the ironing services in your area (and surrounding) and see how much they're charging.

Also, you'll need to look into insurance incase of any damage etc.

The Board Housewife.

No, this has an 'Only Fans' vibe about it! 👀🤣

Differentstarts · 22/01/2025 17:25

I would charge per item and do offers on bundles. As for names I love what pp said pressed for time.

Zanzara · 22/01/2025 17:26

I had a lovely lady who ironed for us for thirty years. She charged by the hour, we dropped it off one evening on the way home from work, then collected it the next.

Prior to that I used an ironing service who charged by weight, and DH used to get his work shirts ironed in Frankfurt during the week, so much per shirt.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 22/01/2025 17:34

I have an ironing lady she charges per item, she does do deliveries and pick-ups.
She absolutely loves ironing, has it down to a fine art…
and has a waiting list!
I am not sure how long turn around is as I was one of her first clients, I don’t have a lot, I am flexible and she fits me in whenever she can.
I put everything on my own hangers but I know people don’t, so that’s an extra.
Also I would insist on cash and in person. She had so many people offering to pay into her account who have never paid and she says she is so shocked at the people who don’t pay.
She is like gold dust so if you are good at what you do and enjoy it go for it! An awful lot of these services now come via agencies which I don’t like so an individual ironer is brilliant.
The Iron Maiden is a great name! Let us know how you get on!

Ihateboris · 22/01/2025 17:39

The Iron Lady

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/01/2025 17:41

The name Iron Maidens is already in use for an ironing service in Orpington.

Sounds good but there seem to be some Iron Ladys around.

Also don't forget to sign up to HMRC for self assessment, they are cracking down on people earning money on the side.

Wonderfulstuff · 22/01/2025 17:49

Go for it! I looked into outsourcing our ironing recently and ironing services near me charge per item and are mad expensive (imho) so clearly there are some profits to be made and plenty of demand. Casual trousers are £5 each, kids dresses £4, pjs £5 etc. Clearly we wear too many things as our weekly bill would be wild so I just carry on doing my own! Good luck.

Ericabro · 22/01/2025 17:49

I used to be called pressed to impress and would now charge £20 for a mixed bag of 20 items and duvet cover/sheets £5 a set depending on size good luck love in summer have a spay bottle with water and fabric conditioner in and spray all linen items and obviously stuff people had left on the washing line all day before starting work also turn everything inside the right way before plugging in and wasting electric and ask for hangers love best place to advertise local shops

I wouldn’t get into collecting and delivering, Trying to get times off people for when they would be at home would be a nightmare if you were dealing with a number of clients
