Using dehumidifier after moving 1m or so

I know you have to wait 24 hours after delivery before first using a dehumidifier but what about when you've just moved it inside a room? I had to move mine away from a window about 1m or so so I could clean the window properly, but I could really do with using it today as I have laundry hanging up. Some online sources say 4 hours is adequate, does anyone know? It's a Meaco 12 litre.

I move mine around all time never occurred to me to wait to use it tbh! Never had any issues

Chemenger · 22/01/2025 11:49

I move mine all the time without any problems. Is it a refrigerant one or a desiccant one?

DevilsIvyy · 22/01/2025 11:51

I move mine up and down the stairs all the time.

Surely the 'not moving' guideline is to cover the box being shunted around delivery vans, then in and out of warehouses, etc, en route to the consumer, not gently moved 1m from one static position to another, after a long period of stability?

ExtraDisorganised · 22/01/2025 11:53

We shift ours around within the room all the time as it is always in the way, no problems at all.

Why would you need to wait before using it? We've been using one since 2018 and never heard of this.

It's a similar issue as with fridges and freezers, I believe, something to do with the liquids inside being disturbed. It depends on the type of dehumidifier, I think. And you are definitely meant to leave them 24 hours after first installing them, that is for sure (if it's that type of dehumidifier). Edit: I searched and apparently it's to allow the refrigerant to settle so it doesn't damage the compressor.

yes, machine like fridges, ac and refrigerant type dehumidifiers normally need to be kept upright. If laid down or tipped up then fluids can flow away from where they are supposed to be. Moving around but kept upright is fine. The manual probably has definitive info.

I think it's only if you tip it over that you have to wait. Same with fridges.

Oh what a good job we've not used the dehumidifier within 24h of buying it or moving house with it then! I had no idea about this (and now I understand why it's so heavy). Will be more careful with it if we move house again.

amoreoamicizia · 22/01/2025 15:48

I had no idea, either, until this last one where the very kind eBay seller attached a note saying not to use initially! It does depend on whether it's a refrigerant or a desiccant type, though, as @Chemenger has pointed out.

(I've only just noticed that "desiccant" only has one "S"!).

If I roll it on its wheels across the room/move it out the way and move it back, I use it immediately. If I lift it for any reason or roll it over rough ground like paving slabs, I leave it overnight before using it again.

LittleGreenDragons · 22/01/2025 16:43

I'm always moving mine around (I've put it on a dolly) but I make sure it's switched off even if I move it a few inches. Interesting snippet about moving house though so thanks for that.
