Do parents or the family of a high profile convicted killer get protection?

Like, new identities etc. I’ve wondered about this today, in light of the absolutely horrific Southport crimes. Also the parents of James Bulger’s murderers.

This isn’t an AIBU, and I don’t want a thread about whether the family in each case has any partial blame and supposedly deserves this or that.

Just what happens in these sort of cases? Social media must make these family members very identifiable and open to revenge.

I reserve all my sympathy for the victims and their loved ones, but this is still a question I want to ask.

Purely a guess but I'd say no. Where does the line get drawn and by whom? Who is afforded protection and who isn't? Parents yes, siblings no? Tough call.

Also conjecture, but I seriously doubt it. Goodness knows that resources for the actual victims of crimes are scant enough. I can't imagine that families caught in the crosshairs fare better.

The Bulger Killers parents had to move IIRC

Axel’s fam were rehoused ages ago.

Don’t know how SS draw the line re safety issues, which is what it comes under.

Bit mean on siblings if they were left to the mob!

Doesn't look like it, I've just googled John Venables parents and there names and photos are shown.
I would imagine that during the aftermath/trial they are advised to not stay in the area, maybe the local authority step in and help with housing them faster somewhere new.

I think I read that Sonia sutcliffe (yourkshire rippers exwife) still lives in the former matrimonial home. However, her neighbours are fine with it, she wasn’t the killer. She lives a very quiet life.

I guess it depends on many factors.

It would make sense to rehouse this family, as twitter is still awash with claims he was muslim, his father stopped him from committing Jihad but didn’t report him, supposed pictures of his dad and his name, allegations that he was involved in genocide in Rwanda , shouts for deportation, punishment and worse.

It's bad enough to have the local community (understandably)angry at you, to be the target of an internet angry mob who make up facts on a whim?

He wasn't part of the Rwandan Genocide, they are Tsutsi. The family had to flee to Uganda, where he joined the forces which defeated the Hutu genocidaires.

Not from my experience. A distant cousins teenager was convicted of attempted murder in the 90's. Her and her husband still live in the same house as they did then. It made national.news at the time.

From @BlueSilverCats : I guess it depends on many factors.

So true. Thats possibly why there is no blueprint response to this question. Thanks all, just shows the ripples I suppose.
