And you hate it!
It's supposed to be 20 hours a week but we've dropped a day as that was too much, they're always tired, affects their behaviour (no matter how early we put them to bed!) Hardly any family time, competitions that are stressful, even though we tell them just to enjoy it, no pressure.
They don't want to give it up.
10 years old now and been doing it for years, gradually built up the hours as they've progressed.
Another meltdown leaving the house this evening.
It's making me miserable.

Gymnastics can take over your life!
I would definitely be reducing - it's not worth the stress!

Yep, knew it was gymnastics! I have been a coach for about 20 years. Eventually too they will peak out, and just not be able to progress further how ever hard they train, or some injuries will pretty much mean game over as far as elite gymnastics is concerned. When they switch pathway/train down if often leaves a big hole in their lives, because thwir teammates are their best friends, because they have spent so much time together.
I am not involved in high level gymnastics now, because I don't believe it is in children's best interests. They have so much more fun in rec and less demanding pathways.

What’s the max hours recommended for her age by British Gymnastics? Is it really as much as 20 hours? Can she decrease her hours and still do 4 piece or even drop to 2 piece?

One of mine does Artistic gym too and it does make me wary. Clubs don’t always seem to understand that they need to stay in the sport to reach their potential, but if they don’t enjoy it or are pushed too hard they will not stay in the sport.

But lots will. In fact so many will, that the clubs are in the position of picking and choosing.

20 hours a week? That's insane. Far too much.

SkankingWombat · 22/01/2025 22:46

Just a thought OP: how is their diet? 20 hours of exercise needs an awful lot of extra calories, which could be difficult to get into even a 'good eater'. Have you considered RED-S? Meltdowns due to exhaustion may well be the most visible symptom.

That’s loads for that age

I have a cricketer. It involves about 6 hours a week winter training plus gym 3 times a week for general fitness. In the summer it's far more about 10 hours per week us match play which can be up to 6 hours per match and 2 matches per week so 22 hours but gym is dropped back to 2 times a week 1 1/2 hour sessions so about 25 hours on total. He has to be driven to training, gym and matches. I don't mind at all because I'm glad he's out in the fresh air getting exercise when so many of his friends disappear into their bedroom on gaming computers for days at a time.
