Would you shop a relative to the police for a minor offence?

If so, then you are perceived as most likely to have a Standard Southern British English accent. Whatever that means,

Not sure where mine comes from as I've travelled a lot and been up North a lot of my life.

Of the 10 accents studied, Glaswegians were perceived as most likely to stand up for someone who was being harassed, people with Scouse accents were seen as most likely to commit crimes and people with Standard Southern British English accents were viewed as most likely to report a relative to the police for a minor offence.

People do make assumptions about accents.

UK's hierarchy of accents: 'I thought mine made me sound stupid'

Sociolinguists say accent bias is prevalent in the UK and affects how people are perceived by classmates, colleagues and friends.

And no, I don't think I would shop a relative for a minor offence. Except one? Maybe...

I'd be fascinated to see how far the stereotypes map to reality.

Maybe not much. Then again, there's a long history of academics writing off stereotypes as baseless prejudice, but that when they are actually tested they turn out to be largely true. The BBC article and the quotes from academics are all about how prejudiced people must be to answer as they did, but no facts brought to the table.

Depends on the offence.
What do you consider a minor offence?
