We are struggling with this Sparks maths question. Is anyone able to help, please?

Hear is and explanation and some examples.

OrsolaRosso · 20/01/2025 19:58

@DanFmDorking thank you.

We know the theory and the method. It's just the application in this instance is eluding us.

Expand the first equation
12x - 6 + 6y +5 = -13

Simplify
12x + 6y = -12
y = -2 - 2x

Replace y in the second equation
(-2 - 2x)(3x + 5) = 3x(2 - 2 - 2x) - 26

Expand
-6x - 6x2 - 10 - 10x = -6x2 - 26

The x^2 terms cancel out, so you'll get an equation for x (hint -16x = -16). Then when you have x you can find y.

Although I may have made mistakes.

Double check your answers by putting them in the original equations and check they work.

@BlackCatsAreBrilliant thank you!

We're having a break for supper and then we will revisit.

I would expand and simplify both equations.
The 3xy terms in the second equation disappear.
Then solve as per usual simultaneous equations.

Might try this on DD2, resitting this summer!

Multiply out the brackets in both initial equations and rearrange.
Then arrange both to the form of simultaneous equations. Then solve. here’s is a messy back if envelope solution if that explains it better

I need to lie down seeing that. I was/am tormented by Algebra. My daughter just looks pityingly at me. I'm sure at school I would have just written 1billion as the answer
