Yes. I do it for free via trusted housesitter and housesitters uk - I'm very particular about the sits I apply for though. I do it to spend time with nice dogs in places I want to go on holiday!

Ive seen these sites, trusted housesitter is really good.

What are the pros and cons?

Pros...
I love dogs and it enables me to spend time with them/walk them without it costing me anything, as I no longer want the full time commitment of my own dog.
I stay in some beautiful houses for free
I get to visit lots of different areas on holiday without paying for hotels/cottages
Cons...
There aren't any really. I choose sits that have lots of info about the dogs so I'm not going in unprepared, and I tend to go for ones that describe their dogs as friendly and biddable.
I choose houses with lots of photos so I know what sort of places I'm staying in. I've also had good chats with the owners before committing to a sit.
Before I started I was worried it would feel weird living in someone's house with all their personal belongings around, but in fact it hasn't bothered me at all. They've all been clean and tidy so far and I've had no issues with the dogs.

You have insurance through the app, and they do background checks on sitters.

As far as people wondering why it's not charged, most of the houses on there are either lovely houses or in lovely locations (or both!) so the sitter is getting free "holiday" accommodation in return.

I have to admit you sometimes get houses advertised that aren't very tempting (for me) but I just don't apply for them. That's not to say someone else wouldn't benefit from staying there - someone might have family in the area they want to visit, but the family don't have space. It's meant to be a mutually beneficial arrangement.

@superclouds is there a fee for the sites?

Yes - trusted housesitters was £129 for the year, housesitters uk was about £29 I think (but that's UK only). I feel like I've had my money's worth as I've had 5 trips away in the 6 months since I joined (which would have cost me 100's on air bnb)

I think you do have to be a pet lover to get the most out of it though, so it doesn't feel like the pets are an added hassle - they feel like a bonus to me! I know a lot of people use trusted housesitters to travel the world and are in it more for the free accommodation rather than a love of animals.

You get reviews on both apps so that helps you get more bookings.

I’m a self-employed house and pet sitter. I’m a qualified Veterinary Nurse and have worked with companion animals for over 30 years. I set up my own business over 7 years ago. I also provide other services such as cat/pet sitting visits, treatments such as nail trimming, ear cleaning etc and am qualified to administer medications such as insulin injections.

I charge £50/night, am fully insured with Petplan business insurance and have a DBS certificate. I always show these documents, including my VN certificate to new customers.

When I’m house sitting in a customer’s home, I provide all my own food and beverages. I keep their home and garden clean and tidy. I launder all the bed linen before they return and provide fresh milk, loaf of bread, etc for them.

I mainly advertise on Facebook and Google business. I don’t have a website as I get lots of recommendations from existing customers.

Pros - meeting lovely customers and their fabulous pets. Getting to stay in some great places which can be like a little holiday. My biggest pro is the peace of mind and reassurance that I give the customer whilst they’re away which means they can relax and enjoy themselves knowing that their pets and home are being well cared for.

Cons - the nature of the business is very seasonal so I am a lot quieter over the winter months and then extremely busy between March and October. Also, it can take a couple of years to build a solid customer base.
