Do you feed workmen in your house?

Had a lovely man come in to fix the boiler. Made him a cup of coffee and offered him a slice of cake.

Just wondering what others tend to do.

I'd never not offer tea/coffee/water and biscuits and if working across a mealtime would offer to make them a sandwich at least, but offer hot meal on a cold day. I treat all tradesmen as I would hope my son be treated by customers if he becomes one. Nothing to do with gender stereotypes, just common courtesy and kindness.

tea / coffee yes

food no

Full meals here. Grew up in a farming home; any workmen coming to do anything got a full meal; stew, roast chicken, doorstop sandwiches, soup, that sort of thing for lunch. There would be bacon and sausage rolls for arrival time. I’ve just carried it on. Always cook something like that and just put it all on the table. They can eat or not eat; it’s all stuff that I can freeze and we can have. But I would ask on the first day in case of dietary restrictions. They get kettle access whenever so i’m not doing teas and coffees.
But i’m self employed so always work my schedule so i’m off/only light work when we’re getting things done to the house.

I’m aware this is the odd one out. I’ve been called handmaiden by mumsnet before for doing this, but i’ve never once experienced a rogue trader or bad job and never have trouble getting workmen out at short notice and usually get discounts on parts of the work.

But who has time to do this unless you're a SAHP without small children to look after? Most women work FT, or, if they don't, have babies or small or SEN dependent children who take up the majority of their time.

I’m a single working mum. Have been a single working mum since my oldest was 2 years old and my youngest 6 months old. So, I work full time, I don’t have a second adult helping me. I still do it. Because it’s how my dad raised me.

I just felt that it the right thing to do to offer a cup of coffee. And then we made many cake slices so I offered him one.

My husband is a builder and works in people's homes everyday, sometimes for months if it's a loft conversion or similar large job . It amazes me that most people don't even offer him a coffee! He's bought a nespresso machine to take to work with him as he likes a nice coffee at work but I think it's really sad if people are around ie. working from home they don't offer a drink in weeks...
So if we have workmen (which we don't alot as my husband does our building work) I will always offer drink, cake/biscuits at the very least. Last week we had 2 scaffolders come and I made them bacon sandwiches. They were so thankful. It doesn't take a lot to show kindness

FunkyMonks · 20/01/2025 13:31

Offer a cup of tea or coffee that's about it.

bluebunnys · 20/01/2025 13:31

I would have thought that anyone working over mealtimes has planned ahead and packed a sandwich/meal?

I personally would not expect my employer to feed me. I prefer to get paid well and choose my own food.

Of course I would always offer a cup of tea or coffee tomorrow anyone visiting me, tradesman of friends

MomToBe2025xx · 20/01/2025 13:31

If its a quicker job I always offer a hot or cold drink and biscuits, if its a longer job or on the weekends etc I will always offer a bacon/ sausage sandwich or a sandwich at lunch, most of the time they have their own food but its just being nice

Nothatgingerpirate · 20/01/2025 13:36

Nothing wrong with it.
Depends on situation!

Solaire18381 · 20/01/2025 13:37

If it's someone doing a job inside the house, I will offer them tea/coffee at most.

If outside I try to go out, especially if there are a few of them!

coldscottishmum · 20/01/2025 13:37

DH is a tradesman. So often sending me photos of tea/biscuits/breakfast rolls. It really is so kind and he would generally refuse out of kindness but it’s very well received when people do it off their own back. He once done a job at 8am on Eid for a family and said not only was the food incredible but the kindness and hospitality was unmatched.

Starlight1984 · 20/01/2025 13:37

Maybe biscuits but my builders have been in for 4 months now so I'd be bankrupt if I fed them every day 😂

Persephonegoddess · 20/01/2025 13:40

Always offer tea and biscuits, got the packers and movers lunch food when we moved. If there longer than a day I set up their own kettle etc in utility. Always let them use downstairs loo.

Zimunya · 20/01/2025 13:42

Unlimited access to tea / coffee and a few packets of biscuits. I generally only have a snack or a sandwich for lunch myself, so definitely not laying on a midday roast for the plumber, and I'm working myself, so no time for that!

PeopleLikeColdplay · 20/01/2025 13:44

I don't drink hot drinks. So the only ingredient I've usually got in for tea and coffee is water.

When someone has been here for a while on a big job, I've ordered some milk and teabags in. Otherwise, no they get nothing!

Spicykitten · 20/01/2025 13:45

We always offer tea and coffee. If we have biscuits in, then we offer those too.

Fontainebleau007 · 20/01/2025 13:46

DH is a tradesman. Would often get asked if he would like tea/coffee. Of course he's always very grateful to any offers of food but would politely decline and not expect to be fed at all. He takes his own lunch. (Occasionally doesn't eat at all, he often would just work through lunch)

rainbowstardrops · 20/01/2025 13:49

I'd offer tea, coffee, or a cold drink and if they were really lucky, I'd buy a packet of biscuits but other than that, nope! I'm not a cafe and I want them to concentrate on what they're doing!

Bignanna · 20/01/2025 13:50

Seeline · 20/01/2025 12:52

They all get offered a cuppa/cold drink depending on the weather. If it's a longer-term set up, they have free use of the kettle etc.
Biscuits to those that are there for the day, or on an ongoing project.

I even let them use the loo!!

Edited

Workmen using the loo - there’s a whole thread about that!

BobbyBiscuits · 20/01/2025 13:51

I gave my plumber a sugar free, low carb cookie I made. He said it was shite! He wasn't wrong. 🤣

I offer them a tea or coffee usually, if they're here for an hour or more. If it's a quick thing then I wouldn't offer as they're charging for their time probably and are usually in a rush! If I've got biscuits I'd give some of those with the tea. I guess if I had made a cake/muffins I'd offer that too. I'd never offer a sandwich or part of a meal I was cooking.

DPotter · 20/01/2025 13:53

Just tea / coffee

FourChimneys · 20/01/2025 13:54

Tea or coffee and homemade cake here, or biscuits if they are just going to be around for a short time.

A couple of years ago we had some workmen during a heatwave so they enjoyed ice-cream from the freezer each afternoon.

I actually think that letting them use the loo is more helpful than offering food, because most do bring their own meals but they can hardly bring their own loo (and public loos aren't easy to find). Luckily we have a downstairs loo that's more convenient than traipsing through the house.

whaddayawannado · 20/01/2025 13:59

I offer tea or coffee, and if they are working for a while, like a few days on a new bathroom etc, then they might get biscuits. Otherwise I wouldn't feed them, no.
