I hear you.

By the time my youngest leaves year 6 in July, I will have been doing the primary school run for 10 years. I’m so done!!

Oreyt · 20/01/2025 16:59

People that enjoy it. How long have you done it for?

specialk9 · 20/01/2025 17:07

I started in 2013. I did a full 7 years. Then had a year off before my middle child started. My youngest hasn't even started school yet 😭 (September)

I've had a solid run for 14 years and only really got the arse with it this year tbf.

I was looking forward to the school run ending, but then when dd was due to start year 7 the bus company changed the bus timetable so that there was now not a bus that got there in time! I ended up doing five years of school runs which were even worse than the primary school one! Five miles of fighting my way through rush hour traffic, versus a 15 minute walk

I don't think it's the people, it's the actual journey surely? We're close to the school so it's not a problem for me but I know other parents have to get the unreliable bus, have the stress of traffic and parking if they drive or just have to walk 30mins+ in all weathers with a couple of loitering children... I'd be celebrating the end of that.

Yes, that was it for me. I liked the staff, I liked the other parents, I liked my DC's friends and on the days when I didn't have anything else on I was happy enough doing the school run and chatting to people whilst the kids played.
But reality was that most of the time, with no nearby family and both DH and I working, the logistics were hard to manage and it could be very stressful sometimes. Once my DC were at secondary school life seemed much less of a rush all of a sudden. I seemed to be forever only just getting to places on time in the primary years and that kind of panic just evaporated.

And if that wasn't enough to look forward to .. no more world book day either once they get to secondary

Great, I hate anything like that... not a creative bone in my body and wonder where the competitive moms get their time from to do things like this?! I did sometimes get 'mom guilt regarding things like minimal effort for world book day and not volunteering on trips etc but, without having to declare that I obviously love and care for my daughters, I'm just not fully immersed in the whole world of primary school, I'm not a mumsy mum!

We have one more year of primary. Am I the only one who finds it sad? 😢

Velvian · 23/01/2025 08:00

My youngest DS is in year 7, so I stopped about 6 months ago. Just worked out that was the end of 22 years of school runs! 😱I've always found school playgrounds very uncomfortable, I was extremely relieved!

I'm with you OP (but I'm a granddad).

BlackeyedSusan · 23/01/2025 09:48

I'm still taking disabled kid to college, which is next county over, and disabled kid to school.

I really did not expect to be doing 17 years of school runs for one child.

It has been a complete new lease of life for me! DS gets himself up in the morning, does his own bfast and lunch. We have a chat while doing our lunches and he leaves the house before me for his bus leaving me to get ready for work.

He loves the independence, I love seeing him be so independent (and love the calm of the mornings now!)

Hope you love this next chapter ☺️
