My period came early by 5 days. Bringing it down to 21 days :/ is this something to worry about?

Mine randomly came early a couple of months ago. I was annoyed as it was 2 weeks since the previous one. Normally mine have been irregular but late rather than early. I put it down to my age (43)

It would be normal for me, when I’ve tracked my period my cycle can be anything from about 18 days to 30 days, I’m regular in so much as my period comes roughly once a month but absolutely not regular enough that I can predict which day it would come. Your cycle can be affected by things like stress, diet etc, even if you’re normally like clockwork I wouldn’t worry about it being early as a one off. If you notice any other changes or have other concerns over the next few months maybe see a doctor for peace of mind, but I thought some fluctuations in the cycle were within the range of normal.

Same here.

In the last couple of years, my cycle until last month ranged from 17 to 27 days - I've never missed a month, but could never say exactly when it would show up. Last month I was terrified I was pregnant as it didn't show up until day 38 😅 I'm hoping that was a blip, rather than having a 20-day variation.

Though possibly a sign of things to come as am early 40s and having other perimenopause signs.

And could also be stress...

ETA the app I use to track my cycles says that up to a 10-day variation is actually normal.

How old are you?

I turned 40 last year. My periods are normally VERY regular, although the cycles have become shorter, they now oscillate between 26 and 25 days.

Around the age of 40 my periods switched to every three weeks and (sob) got heavier. I'm 47 now have hot flushes, insomnia, fatigue and have periods roughly every 6 weeks now.

It's just started OP. You'll probably get some weird months but not all the time at first It isn't anything I would worry about though.

HeavySnowPlease · 19/01/2025 22:19

Yes it's normal for periods to come early or late occasionally. They must've been extremely regular for you to only be finding this out at 40!

Crinkle77 · 19/01/2025 22:23

Nothing to worry about. How old are you?

Funnywonder · 19/01/2025 22:34

My periods started to get shorter at about 45. They were every 19 days. They weren't any heavier, but lasted over a week, with endless spotting. It seemed like I was having periods more days than not and I was knackered all the time. I was sent to be checked over at the hospital and all was well. This went on for a couple of years, then they started to space out a bit more normally for a few years (roughly every 25 days), then they just stopped very abruptly when I was 51.

Yes, I've had the odd variation of 1-2 days max but never 5 days!

As mentioned my cycles are starting to get shorter (so a 25 cycle is still "normal" for me, but a 27 cycle would be out of the norm).

And I know it's normal, but in the 29 years I've been menstruating, this isn't normal for me.

Mine have been the same once I got to 40 - went from 32 days to about 26/27 and every now and then I get 21 days or even 18 🙁 And they last a week now.

HeavySnowPlease · 20/01/2025 08:42

You could phone your GP and ask them for advice if you're worried.

I'm sure I'm already on a list of "hypochondriacs" so I try to avoid going to the GP unless I genuinely have no choice.

Mine started doing this around 41/42, so it's probably the beginning of peri the same as it was for me. It's only happened three times since then (I'm 43).

If it continues maybe go to your GP as it would be a significant change to what's normal for you. But if it just happens occasionally it's most likely just your hormones.

Looking at the data they've been consistently getting shorter since mid '23, but this is definitely my shortest ever cycle. I had a 23 day cycle in June last year which was my previous record since I started logging them 11 years ago.

My cycles have got shorter as I've got older, with lighter/shorter periods. In my teens I had a 34-36 day cycle with nine day periods (ugh). That's gradually lessened as I've got older, now down to a 26 day cycle with a four day period (but much heavier than it used to be on day 1/2). I've had three cycles of 21/22 days in the past two years.

From all I've read that's completely normal and to be expected.

Dude you need to relax a bit or you're going to find peri and menopause more stressful than it needs to be. I don't even know when my period is going to come, despite being on hrt. Then it's pot luck whether it's going to be a short one or last 20 days. My period tracker doesn't know what to do with itself.

Quite a shock when you've been dead on time for decades and only lasting 3 days.

A lot of things can impact your cycle. Outside influences can have an effect, stress, crap diet, a big shock, a harsh lurgy even

I feel your pain. They are really useless if you're a complex person, and you have to decide each time whether the inevitable gaslighting is worth it.

I hope you find some effective care to reassure you or help with any physical issues.

Thank you! I'm sure I'll have to wait and see.

After it took 4 GPs to actually diagnose my psoriasis properly I'm even more hesitant to go in.
