hi all, has anyone moved near Norwich centre , I’m thinking it looks perfect for my wish list of arty connections , local market, culture (theatre, choir, cinema), cafes and a bit of outdoor space/parks for cycling and all accessible without having to drive?

I don’t need schools as this wish list has come about after thinking about how I want to live now my DC’s are in their 20’s, one of them will be moving with me and is the arty one and a good art community is I mportant for their work.

Any advice,? thanks very much 😊

I've just moved here from Surrey. The market is lovely. Shopping on the lanes is great... loads of independent shops etc
I haven't ventured out much yet but there seems to be tons of restaurants and bars to cost from and lots of live music advertised.
I was out the other night ab the playhouse emptied.... hoards of people spilled out looking happy.
With UEA here there's a lot of student life too.
I hope your move goes well.

Also there's the art school here and therefore a real arty feel to lots the bars etc

My mum lives in Norwich and it such a lovely place. Might move there myself when DS is grown up.

You do not want to live in Norfolk - even central Norwich - if you can’t drive. I moved here from London when I couldn’t drive and quickly learnt how unreliable transport is (particularly trains) and the healthcare system means you’re often sent to obscure clinics / Cromer hospital etc for certain things and if you can’t drive then taxis are expensive and transport is awful. If you really can’t drive you will be completely limited to the main central area of Norwich which is lovely but there are so many areas of Norfolk worth visiting that you will struggle to get to. I learnt to drive within 1 year of moving here.

Public transport in Norwich is far better than it used to be. My brother is disabled and can't drive but loves it here. Just has to get a bit creative with the train/bus routes!

ThanksPigeonqueen i can drive but don’t enjoy it and it’s so congested where I am that I prefer not to. managing fine without it but there’s not much around here that I want to get to hence the move. I’m thinking that balancing out the cost of running a car versus the odd taxi it could work if I’m walking distance to the city centre .

Thanks CrystalBall101
have visited for a weekend by train and the station seemed pretty busy and well used, I’ve even checked that my son could get a train Direct from Manchester which is a great improvement on the 3 changes he makes when he visits currently.

I have been there for a few holidays. I agree the market is splendid and plenty of cafes and restaurants. DH used to go to UEA and there are lots of arts events from there. We manage fine using local buses and went to Cromer by bus. DH is very fond of the place. We like the Royal Arcade and there are a lot of independent shops. The market is a splendid place. At the time pubs were important to DH in his younger years. I am not a drinker so pubs are unimportant as far as I am concerned. If you move you will be living in a splendid city. When he was a student Delia Smith used to sort out buffets for students who went to the Catholic Cathedral and he told me those were most popular. She did that a few times a year and they would know as she used to ask who would be there the next week

The centre of Norwich is increasingly pedestrianised which is great for people in wheelchairs but not so good for traders who need access to Dixon's.
