Has anybody been to see this? Totally stuck for dd's 15th birthday so I'm thinking of a London theatre break. Would love to hear what people who've seen it thought of it.

I haven't. Is there a reason for choosing that over Mean girls if you want something fluffy? Moulin rouge is brilliant I mean obviously sad too and there are some adult themes but nothing wildly inappropriate for a 15 year old. The stage is amazing

Saw it in December. Sets and costuming v impressive but songs lacklustre. Very shouty singing and lost a lot of the plot (we took someone who hadn’t read the book or seen the film ) as the music drowned out the words. Vanessa Williams fabulous but didn’t enjoy the woman who played Andi. All in all we were glad we had only paid £30 for our tickets!

Yes I went earlier this month with my teen. We enjoyed it but it didn't blow our minds. We saw a couple of other plays on the trip and preferred those (now closed so won't recommend).

Yeah I saw it last November. It was good, wasn't amazing. I probably wouldn't recommend it.

Hadestown is brilliant! Might be worth familiarising her with the myth first though. We saw Mean Girls albeit on Broadway. I'd definitely recommend.

Pieandchips999 · 19/01/2025 21:36

@Wibblywobblybobbly we just saw Hadestown it was brilliant, but wasn't sure whether to recommend it for a 15 year old for their birthday. Quite a leap from devil wears Prada. It's actually another part of our group which saw Mean Girls as they wanted something light and fun

What about the Percy Jackson musical? I’ve heard good things about that

I guess it depends on the 15 year old. I'd have loved it at that age, but I did enjoy English Literature at school! There were quite a few teens in the crowd when we went.

Two colleagues saw it last week and said it wasn’t good. Much better shows around as others have recommended.
I’d suggest
Moulin Rouge
Six
Haven seen Hadestown but it keeps being recommended to me.
Have dinner at Cafe Zedel beforehand (book though) and it’s fab and right in the heart of theatre land.

RoastPotatoConnoisseur · 20/01/2025 21:47

I saw it when it was previewing at Plymouth so it may have changed slightly since then. It was okay but as others have said, not mind blowingly amazing. Vanessa Williams was great though.

Thanks all! Sorry for late reply, I managed to lose my own thread 😂 now looking at moulin rouge instead, or other alternatives. Thanks for saving me some £££ on a show we likely wouldn't enjoy!
