Why are so many uber expensive properties in London so darned tacky ?

Cold, soulless, blingy, often with a real masculine decor vibe. Some of the furniture looks like cheap as chips stuff you’d get off your local Facebook basket place shop a la mirrored drawers and industrial style metal coffee tables. The art work weird as hell. And random blow up photos of a glamorous woman. One had an abstract picture of JFK. Appreciate everyone has their own taste but there just seems to be a common theme. Why ?

More money than sense? You cannot buy good taste.

AquaPeer · 19/01/2025 12:31

I’ve never seen an uber expensive London house on Rightmove that looks like this. What do you mean?

Allatonce2024 · 19/01/2025 12:32

I always thought these types of properties were for money laundering.

It doesn't make sense why you'd furnish a £10m property with b&m decorations

LlynTegid · 19/01/2025 12:33

Isn't it the same almost everywhere? The one that came to mind was former footballer Gary Neville's one which was dubbed a Teletubby house.

madamweb · 19/01/2025 12:33

Ooh can you share some examples? How bizarre

Maybe back in the day but it’s hard now. I used to know Someone who did money launder 😭 and she furnished the multi million pound flats with very expensive furniture- why wouldn’t you? Buying the furniture is another way to money launder

BlackberrySky · 19/01/2025 12:40

Lots of them are "flipped", ie bought by an investor for the sole purpose of refreshing /refurbishing and then selling to someone who either doesn't want the hassle of doing a refurb, or is only going to spend about six weeks a year in it.

Agreed entirely. For example: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/148907393

So many are so ‘footballers wives’. The Surrey high end properties are even worse for this IMO.

That’s not full of b&m stuff though, it’s going for an opulent luxury aesthetic that you don’t like.

and believe it or not- different cultures like Chinese or Russians often buy these properties and have SHOCK HORROR a different taste to your colonial preferences 😏

This, but also different countries and cultures have very different aesthetics and a lot of very expensive property in London is foreign owned and decorated professionally by firms that opt for Luxury Emirates Hotel on steroids vibe with an abundance of marble and shiny and expensive finishes. I bet people in many countries would think the U.K. style, which it less matchy, matchy and more intimate, is grubby and poky.

High ceilings, hard surfaces and large spaces are commonly desirable in hot or humid climates and just because air con is a thing, there no reason why a pretty much universal aesthetic would change because of it.

We are all influenced by the taste around us; terracotta paint, rag rolled walls and pine were once a new edgy and much vaunted new vibe that soon percolated down to almost everyone back in 80s, just like coloured bathroom suites.

The house dressers, owners and interior designers clearly usually follow the logic that if someone has spent. 25 million on a house they want it to look expensive and that translates into materials and scale. It’s not for me but that reflects my heritage.

LightDrizzle · 19/01/2025 12:46

@GloriousTuga - Ouf! That’s awful.

I hate the fashion for making your house look like a mediocre hotel.

DrasticAction · 19/01/2025 12:56

Isn't all this Kelly hoopen style furniture

Deathraystare · 19/01/2025 12:57

It looks dark and oppressive too!

mynameiscalypso · 19/01/2025 13:05

They aren't generally properties that are lived in, at least not full time. Plus they are designed to attract overseas buyers who like the look.

ExitViaGiftShop · 19/01/2025 13:40

I think a lot of them are 'dressed' to be put on the market. It's all fake.

Pastalina · 19/01/2025 13:45

Bloody hell that’s horrible.

Bluevelvetsofa · 19/01/2025 14:38

The parquet floor looked ok.

Miq · 19/01/2025 14:45

Lol colonial. The house is in London.

jollygreenpea · 19/01/2025 15:12

do they all use the same interior designer?

OP posts:
maxplanck · 19/01/2025 15:55

@GloriousTuga the artwork looks like something you’d get from The Range 🤔

MayaPinion · 19/01/2025 15:59

They all just look so BEIGE.

TheAirfryerQueen · 19/01/2025 16:07

I like colour and chintz. These poshos are averse and prefer to decorate their homes like dental surgeries. Not my bag. (Not my budget either! £25m? 😱)

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2025 16:10

I thought yesterday when I happened to be looking at houses in Highgate.
