Respond to bragging

I have a close family member who we see regularly who constantly brags about the money they get in benefits, what they earn, how much they are getting in inheritance and how much they save each month.

Our family don't receive any benefits, earn less and aren't due to receive any inheritance. They know this.

They smirk and mention it regularly in conversation which is unlike any one else I know professionally or personally. I can only imagine it's to show off.

They've always been big on onupmanship and I honestly am tired of it.

I generally respond noncommittally but any suggestions on how to respond that might stop them going on in the future about money would be appreciated!

I’d be saying if you’re doing so well why are you relying on benefits for a boost 🤔

TulipLilyRose · 18/01/2025 11:00

They say they're entitled so claim them

The subject is irrelevant really.

When someone bangs on constantly about anything at all you have two choices.

  1. Grey rock/eye roll.
  2. Say something like "Yeah I know you said. In fact you say that every time I see you".

Nothing else you can do if you can't avoid speaking to them.

Start asking to borrow money from them 😂

Tell them you posted on SM about their communicative attitude towards money and the results of the online survey were:

A) These people are merely maximising what they are entitled to from a democratically functioning society.

B) These people are just boring Cunts.

Out of a response of 84,782, 0.12% (99 people) voted for A and an overwhelming 99.88% (84,672 people) voted for B, with one abstention which was a dog.

What type of benefits?

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/01/2025 11:41

Grey rock. Yep you’ve said that every time I see you. Yes, I heard you say that eleventy billion times before. Do you have new news?

Do you have to see them? Do they have any redeeming qualities? Are they old enough to remember the Harry Enfield "Considerably richer than yow" sketch if you take the piss?

Genius. Do this, OP, please. And update us on what they say.

Ha, ha, yes, genius!

Vaxtable · 18/01/2025 11:46

Just respond, I know you keep telling us. Then just keep saying ‘so you said’ after each boast

StormingNorman · 18/01/2025 11:50

Aren’t you the lucky one. Did you know Sheila and Tony are having a baby?

Hanto · 18/01/2025 11:53

I can’t imagine being involved in conversations where someone’s entire contribution consists of them telling me about how much money they have or will have, from whatever source. Just say ‘Bored now. Let’s talk about paint drying?’

Thanks everyone!!

And I agree! It's so boring and strange and not like any conversations I have with anyone!
