Can we talk about packing cubes?

I have noticed these getting mentioned a lot we are going on a fairly long trip soon and wondering if anybody has any recommendations?
I can't decide if they are a good idea or just a bit of a gimmick or possibly both.
Thanks.

I am a convert! They came into their own on a multi destination holiday , new hotel every 2/3 days . Kept everything organised in my case, made me remember where I had put the phone charger, in the underwear cube btw!
I have a swim cube, underwear cube and a tops and shorts one. Now use them all the time and can just pop the cube in a drawer at the hotel. And swim cube stays packed in wardrobe at home all the time. Lots for sale on Amazon, mine are quite basic and cost about £8 .

aintnospringchicken · 18/01/2025 09:12

Packing cubes were a game changer on our Canada / US road trip.We stayed in several different locations over 4 weeks. We were more or less living out of our suitcases as it would have been such a hassle to unpack and then pack our suitcases every couple of nights or so.Had underwear in one,t shirts in another, socks and swimwear in another. Bigger items like shorts ,skirts and trousers I just put flat in the case but they were easy to find. So easy to take out a packing cube and put it in a drawer.I got mine from Amazon and I think it was less than £20 for a set of 5. You can get compression cubes too which I like the idea of but haven't tried yet.

Love mine!
Any brand will do. So much easier.

olderbutwiser · 18/01/2025 09:14

I love them, and so does DH. I have the ones that squash stuff down. I don’t think the benefits of that are that great but I;m a pretty minimalist holiday packer.

It’s great having an easily identifiable bag with my underwear in it, one with my swimming stuff, one with t-shirts, one with dirty clothes etc.

NB:

  • you do not have to use every cube on every trip
  • you do not have to put every item in a cube

They were a Facebook click bait whim that worked out so well we went on to buy more.

BobbyGentry · 18/01/2025 09:15

I’m a packing cube convert! Colour coded so I can tell my clothes vs family’s. There’s laundry packing cubes too! Tends to be: spare shoes cube, toiletries cube, cable and technology cube, delicates cube, main clothes cubes. It’s easy to unpack too!

BarkPench · 18/01/2025 09:16

I like the ones with mesh so you can see what you’ve got in there

Eraclea · 18/01/2025 09:16

Love them on a trip where I’m moving on to a new place every day or couple of days. No rummaging about in the case to pull out underwear or a T-shirt so by the time I’m a week in, everything is in total disarray. Everything stays neat.

No point to them if you’re staying places long enough to properly unpack.

Soontobe60 · 18/01/2025 09:17

Im another convert. DH laughed at me using them, until he had to empty his bag once at security because the scanner showed something up (turned out to be tweezers he’d forgotten about). All his stuff fell off the table and the security man had to retrieve his undies 😂
Compression cubes come into their own if you only have carry on bags as you can get more stuff in.

Drachuughtty · 18/01/2025 09:19

Never travel without them! Everything is separated and makes it easier to pack things down smaller. Even if you just have one and the rest of the items are loose. Mesh ones are a must. Prefer ones that scrunch down into a small parcel when not in use. I have the muni ones which are amazing but I think Muji has gone bust.

Changingplace · 18/01/2025 09:19

I love them! I got a set from Amazon, use them all the time - I travel a lot for work as well so it also means I can put my laptop and work stuff in my wheely case and open my case in the office without worrying I’m going to flash my PJs or clean knickers 😆

Actually I disagree! I put my dirty clothes into cubes over the holiday, sorting them into how they’ll be washed - whites, colours etc. then when I get home, I just have a pile of cubes by the washing machine already sorted for washing rather than the mountain of dirty clothes that hang round for ages!

OrangeBlossom28 · 18/01/2025 09:20

DH and I did a French road trip last summer and spent time staying in a different hotel each night, sharing one large suitcase. I'd bought packing cubes as people were raving about them.
Completely converted! They made travelling so much easier and we knew what was packed in which cubes and whose was whose.
I bought a set from Amazon for about £12.

Talipesmum · 18/01/2025 09:20

I can maybe understand for compression cubes, but when I pack my suitcase I have all my undies in the mesh bit under the lid, all my tops stacked in one corner, dresses in the other, trousers and warm tops in the other, then shoes all together (or something like that). I don’t just pull things out wildly - I treat it like a drawer and take out the things I want. Is that so unusual?
And if going away with family either we all have our own bags or we share in an organised way.

Drachuughtty · 18/01/2025 09:21

Another way I use them is if DC's stuff is in my suitcase, I'll just pack it all into a cube and that can go straight into her room on arrival while the case stays with me.

BadgerFace · 18/01/2025 09:22

I found them useful on a multi-stop family trip last summer especially different colours so I could organise between parents/children/dirty/clean clothes etc.

I’ve also since used on work trips where I just wanted to take a rucksack for 2 nights rather than carry in bag.

Utilising between trips to keep bedding sets together and separated and less space taken up in the cupboard.

Zippidydoodah · 18/01/2025 09:26

Love them and use them for every trip, also colour coded for members of the family. I had the idea of spreading family members’ cubes between cases so that if one case was lost or delayed, everyone would still have clothes (family of six).

tip: mine from Amazon are great; they are really good quality with strong zips and have lasted well. Do not buy from primark! I supplemented with a pack of three from there and one of them broke straight away. They are rubbish.

chollysawcutt · 18/01/2025 09:28

Yes, they are really good, especially if you are 'hand luggage only'.

Different sizes for different uses (small for undies, larger for jumpers for eg). It just condenses your packing a bit and makes it easier to find things. Its like a filing system for clothes! I'm a big fan.

I just got mine off Amazon. Think they were called 'Go' or something. They have a mesh top, unzip all the way around and a little handle (so that you can hang the bag up I guess or easily pull it out)

stargazer02 · 18/01/2025 09:29

I think it depends on what kind of organiser you are. (I like to be able to see everything!)
I can't get on with them at all. I have a bag for essentials like phone charger, a toiletry bag and dirty clothes bag. Everything else just gets folded up neatly.

lavenderlou · 18/01/2025 09:32

I found them really helpful when we were camping and didn't have storage to unpack bags. If I had accommodation with drawers and wardrobes I probably wouldn't bother.

chelseahealyslips · 18/01/2025 09:36

I'm a convert. I like having everything organised. I use the compression ones because I have a big family and especially on our last holiday where we had to pay for luggage, we took 4 cases for 8 people and they worked brilliantly.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/01/2025 09:38

Couldn't be without mine. They were particularly useful when the children were small and sharing a suitcase.

I use them year round for storing out of season clothes too.

Bibbetybobbity · 18/01/2025 09:38

Love, love, love them. You can pack so much more, and it’s all tidy. Roll your clothes to pack them. And my cubes are from primark. Absolutely fine in terms of quality as long as you don’t really overstuff them.

Chewbecca · 18/01/2025 09:41

I don't bother when we are going to just one destination and will fully unpack there but do find them useful for multi destination trips.

I agree about colour coding spreading cubes between suitcases and also about Amazon against Primark. Our primark cubes only survived one trip and I definitely didn’t overstuff them and treated them well.
