feeding the 3am hunger

wide awake hungry - aware Ive no right to be as we had a fruity chicken curry and rice then fruit at 7.00pm
I have opened the fridge door, looking in willing a sherry trifle to appear,
logically knowing it won’t yet realising there is nothing to eat.
I dont want fruit as I dont want all that sucrose, salad is too indigestible, there is
no bread, biscuits, cake, cold sausages, bagels or cold meat left. I’m tempted to make porridge, although we have no honey or figs, might settle for Ovaltine,
’the food drink of the night’ as it was known.

What does any one else eat or drink at this time, do you especially keep food
for night time when you are hungry, beyond White’s lemonade of course.

I have a chocolate pudding calling from the fridge and my stomach is rumbling

nickatiara · 18/01/2025 03:32

I don't think it's normal to have a 3am hunger, or a healthy habit to encourage. The only time I might get it is if I've have a particularly carb heavy supper, or a really big meal that evening. A fruity curry and rice will do it actually!

If I felt my hunger would stop me from being able to get back to sleep then a banana and glass of warm milk.

WellsAndThistles · 18/01/2025 03:34

Just water, can't be arsed to get off the sofa and brush my teeth again so no tasty treats despite fancying a snack! ('sleeping' on the sofa tonight as I'm wide awake)

@nickatiarabut it's a nightmare when you wake up at funny o'clock and want a snack! I've just woken up, not hungry but would probably get sliced apple and cheese if I was

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 18/01/2025 03:49

Have a glass of water. Unless you eat at 3am every day so it's a routine meal for you, you are most likely thirsty not hungry.

Eat pecans.

Difficultwill · 18/01/2025 03:51

Bowl of oats is what my fitness mad nephew has at 3am for a snack if hungry. He says it is good all round. Why can’t you sleep? Just hunger or other reasons as hunger does not normally wake an adult who has eaten last night!!!!!!

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 18/01/2025 03:52

a bowl of rice krispies 😁

HollyKnight · 18/01/2025 04:01

Cheddar ceese and mixed nuts are my go to snack. But I eat low carb to avoid sugar cravings in the first place.

In your position, if I was craving something sweet, I would just eat the fruit because it's still better than bread, chocolate or biscuits. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe get some yogurts in or something.

wavingfuriously · 18/01/2025 04:03

I've been eating at 3am for 9 months and thinking bout going to GP about it! Not normal and teeth have suffered since don't brush them after.. currently eating crackers with peanut butter

garlictwist · 18/01/2025 04:07

You can't be genuinely hungry at that time if you have had dinner. I wouldn't eat in the middle of the night. Just wait it out til breakfast

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 18/01/2025 04:18

To be fair I only give in the odd time. Once every few months.

bakewellbride · 18/01/2025 06:19

I'm in the middle of a 3pm - 7am fast which I started yesterday and don't even feel particularly hungry now despite having eaten nothing for nearly 16 hours so I don't understand this at all. It doesn't sound healthy. No one should be eating at night unless they're breastfeeding/ a shift worker or some other good reason.

I'm so happy for you, being so perfect 🙄

DiddlyDaddlyDoo · 18/01/2025 07:32

People can get hungry at any time of the day or night 😅

I'm 5'1, weigh almost 8 stone and I frequently find myself having something to eat around 3am/4am ( only included weight incase any posters apart saying about weight gain )

I can't see what's unhealthy about it. We are all different and have different body clocks ect

PhonePhonePhone · 18/01/2025 07:38

Hunger's a sensation - if you feel hungry, you're hungry. Not the same as "needing food" (which none of us often does these days).

Cheese, OP, for me. Lovely night time cheese.

Shrinkingrose · 18/01/2025 07:41

I’m surprised at this, I’ve never got up to eat in the middle of the night. And neither has my family, stunned someone gets up and eats cheese etc.

I would assume there is a health issue there, if you’re absolutely sure it is actual proper hunger and not thirst or greed.

Completelyjo · 18/01/2025 07:43

If you are regularly waking from hunger at 3 am it sounds like you aren’t eating enough in the day.
Having no access to quick filling foods like bread etc sounds quite disordered.

TianasBayou · 18/01/2025 07:43

Perfectly normal!
Warm milk and a thick slice of bread and butter.
Or a bowl of Greek yoghurt sprinkled with homemade granola.

rommymummy · 18/01/2025 07:45

Weetabix, digestive biscuits.

CaraCameleon · 18/01/2025 07:46

I get this sometimes and I think it’s a crash in blood sugar, often when I’ve eaten very little for dinner . Also, it’s often thirst.

DustyLee123 · 18/01/2025 07:48

You are usually hungry in the night due to a blood sugar drop, so don’t have anything to spike your blood sugar in the evening.

eurochick · 18/01/2025 07:57

I understand the hunger but I would never get up for a snack then. I'd just ignore it and go back to sleep.

TheRozzers · 18/01/2025 08:13

This thread is an eye opener. I think it's hilarious that some people wake up at 3am and eat cheese and sherry trifle. Why the fuck not?

I would never get back to sleep, that would be me up for the day 😴

Lobstercrisps · 18/01/2025 08:15

Nothing in the middle of the night. At 3am my alarm will be going off soon at 4.45.

I usually congratulate myself on not having eaten too late and the lovely empty feeling in my stomach, awaiting my breakfast with excitement.

Literally the only time I'm up at 3am is for the dogs barking and waking me up!

TheRozzers · 18/01/2025 08:15

Also, lemonade OP? In the middle of the night? This is giving me Mallory Towers midnight feast vibes
