Ta in FE and wondering if I'm being treated fairly

I'm a ta in further education.
I help with shared support in classes and I've been asked to help two students with maths for their gcse foundation paper.
I only have them for 3 hours a week but l do need to prepare for them and I've not been given any extra time to do that.
Should I be getting time and if so how much? I probably need 30 to 40 mins a week?
Also is this part of the role or should I be getting extra pay? I understand that second question is probably a contract question but I think it's vague it doesn't mention specific teaching for a exam on my own eg it's not support.

I think TAs are asked to do as much as they will tolerate. You should be given materials by the class teacher and not have to prepare your own materials. If you are not given this and expected to just come up with something yourself you need time off timetable to do this and to be given a clear idea of where to source materials from. Are other TAs being asked to do similar targeted support and what are they expected to do?
In an ideal world TAs would receive extra money for doing what is in effect teaching but I think this is just another expectation of TAs now.

3 hours a week with 2 students is a lot of time! I do small group intervention which is not seen as teaching (although it is) and I'm not paid any more. It's just put up and shut up really. Madness how skilled TAs are and how little pay and recognition they get.

I don't necessarily expect pay but I do think I should be given time.
I'm wondering if there is a special ratio

I think you need to ask for time and find out from your line manager what the planning time to hours teaching ratio is generally. I work at an academy and they just make it up as they go along but your college may be different. Ask around and see what other people are expected to do.

CanAnyoneAdvise1 · 18/01/2025 08:41

@MealDealDreamz unfortunately my line manger is kind of person who would make it up in her head and I'd get stuck with what she suggests which is probably nothing.
So I'd like to arm myself with some idea first of what people get. What do you get for small group intervention.
Also there is no teacher for this to get anything from

I don't get anything extra for small group intervention. It's just seen as part of my job I'm afraid. We've tried fighting this with the union as we think it's teaching. Some TAs were actually leading exam classes and they ended up being paid a teaching rate for these hours but only after a big fight. I would ask your union rep for advice and see what they think. Don't just accept what your line manager says. If you're not even being supplied with materials that's definitely teaching in my eyes. You definitely need an hour of planning time and some kind of input from the maths dept as to materials to use. They should not be leaving you to it without any support at all. I'm assuming you're capable and able to find materials yourself, hence why they are leaving you to it but that's not really the point. The more you do, the more they will just pile on you.

@@@@MealDealDreamz thanks meal

When you say you didn't get anything extra do you mean money or planning time?

@CanAnyoneAdvise1 I don't get any extra money or planning time. I am going to raise this with SLT soon as I am just getting burnt out

CanAnyoneAdvise1 · 19/01/2025 17:13

@MealDealDreamz thanks for your comments

It's petty crap for us isn't it.

I don't feel my union really underpants what I do either and I don't think there is one that soley represents us?

I would contact them and ask them for advice especially someone who knows about support staff's rights etc.
