Baby Shower gift registry

I’m going to a baby shower next month and along with the invitation they’ve sent out an Amazon gift registry list. I’m new to baby showers.

I’m totally fine with the list and would like to get something they want.

I’ve always waited until the baby arrives before giving a gift but know gifts are expected at the baby shower.

My question is - when do I give the gift? On Amazon I have the choice to ship to the “registry address” or my own address. I’d like to give the gift in person so I can include a note and wrap it etc. so am thinking get it delivered to me. But are they expecting it to be delivered direct?

Don't want to break etiquette!

Thanks.

They've already broken whatever ettiquette does exist by asking for specific things so it doesn't matter.

If you want to get something for after the baby is born in the traditional manner then do that.

I imagine the ship to registry is there as an option for people who would find that easier.
if you’d prefer to wrap and give it yourself then it’s fine to do that.

Do you feel the same way about wedding registers or would you be pissy about a couple asking for cash / honeymoon donations instead?

let me guess, no one should ever give an indication of a gift they’d like ever. Even in situations when gift giving is totally normal and most people usually prefer to now it will be something the recipient wants

I only been to one baby shower and they did have Amazon gift registry. We had it delivered to us, wrapped it nicely and took it on a day. Then during the day we all gathered and mum to be opened the presents - it was really lovely. Some people also brought gifts not from the list, loads and loads and loads of nappies in a gift baskets wrapped in cellophane with a bow ! It was hilarious but she loved it, as this was something she needed the most. Not that they couldn't afford it but it was just practical.

Nope. I love a cash for honeymoon request. Wedding gifts are a present for an event. Baby showers are a weird pre-event.

I don’t mind them telling me exactly what they would like - there’s a few skincare brands that I wouldn’t have known and bits that are obviously following a colour scheme. I just don’t like the transactional nature of an Amazon purchase and then shipping direct to them, that’s if I can get over the pre-baby bit itself.

It's fine to ship to you so you can wrap it and take it on the day. I think ship to them is designed for the bigger items because some people have prams or cribs on their registry.

Strokethefurrywall · 17/01/2025 12:51

I buy something off the registry, have it shipped to me for wrapping and then bring to the shower.

Easy, simple. But I don't live in Uk so baby showers are totally normal here. I had a baby shower but didn't do a registry, it's not obligatory.

Some people on here seem to think baby showers are grabby, crass or "vulgar" (top MN word) but in reality they're no different to a wedding registry. Instead of buying a toaster for the happy couple to help them "set up home", you buy a pack of bibs or nursing muslins...

RosiePosie88 · 17/01/2025 16:03

Thanks everyone, I’ll ship to me and take it wrapped on the day.

I think it's okay to say what you'd like if asked

How very grabby of them. Whatever happened to sending a little pair of socks and some bibs after the baby is born?

I'm of the old school of thinking that it is bad luck to buy stuff for the baby before it has arrived safely anyway.

Threebabiesin · 22/01/2025 12:40

I'm also a little torn, not at all by anyone being specific in their requests, as that happens all the time for weddings. I'm more conscious of turning up empty handed once they've had the baby, but i guess the reality of that is it could be weeks before i'm lucky enough to visit etc. As a gift giver i think it feels nice to take a small congratulations present but in terms of what parents need and want i'm happy to follow the registry. I've seen a new one recently and it really gives the full experience, less Amazon-y!
