Why do people say perms are bad but straightening is ok?

If anyone asks about wanting to perm their hair to get curls/waves, everyone says no, don't do it!

Usually followed up with 'it went out of fashion for a reason!'

However, there are plenty threads encouraging people to buy new straighteners, heated rollers, tongs, hairdryers and other doo dads.

Surely all processes and heat devices harm hair?
Is this thinly disguised prejudice against curls or a very dated view of the world?
Most people out there have different hair types now and especially younger women are embracing natural texture more and more.

I think it’s just that you always like the opposite of what you have…straight hair wants curly hair and vice hair just like if you have small boobs you want big ones and if you have big you want small... be a broad generalisation.
as you get older I think hair fashion has less influence it’s more you want something that suits and you like yourself.

I always want the opposite of what I have Grin
Mine is flat and limp with no real shape so I would kill for big and curly.
I love straight thick hair when it's natural too. Sadly I have neither.

As for fashions I don't see any hair trends much in younger people now, except maybe the fixed centre parting. I was people watching a few days back and saw a huge mix of hair types on young women.
I very rarely see short crops on them, though.
Good to see a bit more diversity.

I get cries when people say curly hair is old fashioned, my hair is naturally curly. I'm fortunate that I don't need to perm to get the curls, just scrunch and leave to dry. Go for it if you want to try, it isn't any worse than chemical straightening or many dyes
