Whisky help! Or other 50th birthday suggestions.

I don't drink it. I do know DH prefers Glenmorangie The Original 10 Single Malt.
He doesn't like Glenmorangie A Tale of the Forest (he threw it).
He did like Glenmorangie a Tale of Cake (it's still in the cupboard, half full).

It's his birthday soon and I want to get him something a bit special as it's his 50th but I don't have money to burn so I'm reluctant to spend lots on something he might not like. Can anyone suggest something similar but a bit posher? Maybe Japanese?

Or another suggestion? I've a budget of about £200 in total, and need to get him something from the DC too.

Trip to somewhere with a whiskey tasting session?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/01/2025 13:50

I like Glenmorangie 10 year old single Malt. Others I like
Arran 10 year old single Malt and their port cask whisky.
Bunnahabhain
Glenlivet
Some mature aberfeldy single malts.

For a gift I might like to try a couple of bottles in a £50 ish range, or a taster flight at the whisky society or tour of a distillery. Spending a lot on one bottle is a bit of a risk if he's chucked whisky away he didn't like (I respect this move).

If you can get it writers tears seems to be a winner I know a few whiskey drinkers and that's their choice .

My DH likes his whisky (doesn't like overly peaty) and does like a couple of Japanese ones. He likes Suntory Hibiki (about £75) or Nikka by the Barrel (about £40 - £45 for a smaller bottle).

DaisyCottonClock · 15/01/2025 14:02

For Japanese: Yamazaki 12 year, Suntory Yamazaki, or Nikka by the Barrel. All very smooth, honey, vanilla and not peaty at all

For another glenmorangie to try 16y the nectar is very smooth

Or you could get a tasting selection from the Master of Malt website. Very cute wax sealed minatures from different regions. They have a Japanese selection which is very good

My husband is a Glenmorangie fan but not the 'silly flavours' as he calls them! He'd recommend the Quinta Ruban 14yr old and the Nectar 16yr old.

He also likes Tomintoul 16yr old (much smoother than their 10 and 12 year olds).

NellieJean · 15/01/2025 14:41

Look on Master of Malt. Macallan is our favourite, aged in sherry casks so very smooth and easy to drink. Unless he likes them avoid the very “peaty” or smoky ones as they are very much an acquired taste.

If he has a specific taste then I would say you need to match that profile. Personally I’d never throw any bottle out so I can see you Presure.

My boss loves whiskey but I know what she likes and wanted to get her something different for her 40th. I bought her a set of these glasses they were very well received.

I'd suggest booking him a guided taster event, so he can try some different ones. If you're in London, the whisky bar at the Athenaeum hotel on Piccadilly is amazing - I think the chief there is Angelo and he's excellent.

Otherwise, maybe have a phone call with a specialist whisky shop, tell them about the kind of things he likes and chances are they can recommend something along those lines. I've dealt with the Milngavie branch of The Scottish Gantry before and the chap there is incredibly helpful.

Thank you! The Nectar 16yr was a big hit and praised by the rest of the family too. All took photos of the bottle!
