Would you wash a 100% wool coat?

Got a total bargain from Vinted and it's a lovely chocolate brown pure wool coat. It does however have a very faint charity shop type smell!

I've currently got it hung outside in the fresh air and will dry clean it if need be but I wondered about washing it on the wool wash in my machine?

Has anyone done this before and not had a disaster?!

I never have, but if you're going to do it, use a delicates bag or similar. I do bras in pillowcases but you aren't likely to fit a coat in one.

No, I absolutely wouldn't, and I'm quite easygoing about washing stuff. Combo of wool and (presumably) lining is likely to be a bad outcome, I would think.

Spray it with Febreze/ironing water type stuff. Steam it if you have access to a garment steamer (or buy a cheap handheld one, to save on dry cleaning costs). Leave it to air well after that, and I am sure it will be fine.

I machine washed a charity shop wool jacket once, on delicate, to freshen it up. It worked, but was left crumpled looking.
Cool ironed it, but it still looked creased. 😕 Wore it a couple of times, then it went back to charity shop. 😢

Steamer all the way!!! Or hang it outside the shower for a bit x

Cuppachuchu · 15/01/2025 10:56

Ooh, just a thought. If it's only smelly, but not actually dirty, try putting it in the freezer in a bag for a couple of days.
Sometimes it gets rid of the smell.

Theemperorsnewshoes · 15/01/2025 10:58

Take it to a dry cleaner. If you love it, it’s absolutely worth treating it with care.

Snowmanscarf · 15/01/2025 10:58

Not in the machine, I’d shrink it!

Rictasmorticia · 15/01/2025 10:58

No because it unlikely that the lining and facings are wool. The water might have a different effect on each fabric. Take it to the cleaners but remind them it is wool.

I would chance a jumper or cardi but not a coat, definitely take it to the dry cleaner.

I’ve had this problem many times! Spray it with vinegar and it erases all odour beautifully. Might have to do it a few times though

Surprisingly the dry cleaners won’t get rid odours. I’ve googled this a fair bit!

I wouldn’t chance a coat. I have had success with dry clean at home kits. I’m an avid vinted shopper so refuse to pay as much to clean the item as I bought it for. This type of thing I think I got mines out of b&m. I’ve used it on a woolen coat and a silk skirt and both were fine.

I've heard that neat vodka works
Spray it on and leave to dry
I have no idea if this would work on wool-maybe do a test patch somewhere

squirrelnutcartel · 15/01/2025 11:56

Wash it in the bath in tepid water and hand-wash liquid. Leave it to soak for half an hour to get any dirt out. Rinse well in cold water and then gently squeeze (don't wring) water out. Leave to drip dry. Don't let it remain wet for too long or it'll go musty. Put the heating or the fire on and it'll dry sooner.

I've done this method with delicate old curtains and they were fine.

Boffle · 15/01/2025 12:00

I wouldn't wear anything from vinted without washing.
If it's a dream of a coat then pay for dry cleaning. If it was dirt cheap and you are willing to risk having to bin it then cool short wash.
I bought a fabulous Joe browns coat on vinted. It cost me £15 to be dry cleaned but well worth it.

Turophilic · 15/01/2025 12:00

Vodka works, they do it in the theatre to clean sweaty costumes between performances. Freezer also works.

Best of all is hanging outside for a good fresh blow.

Auldspinster · 15/01/2025 12:01

Vodka is used in costume departments to freshen up costumes that can't be washed. I'd give it a spray and hang it up. I've got a garment steamer I got from Asda for about £20 that I'd follow it up with, if it were me.

FerretChops · 15/01/2025 12:20

Thanks all

I've hung it outside as it's bright and mild here today so I'll do that until later on this afternoon. I do have a garment steamer so I'll also do that!

The smell is only ever so faint so that's something. And I always throw all vinted clothes straight in the machine usually but obviously can't with this one

It's a Jigsaw chocolate brown pure wool coat. Got it for 6 quid and it's immaculate! I wanted the Claudia W m&s one but out of stock so this is next best thing

Sounds like it would be worth getting professionally cleaned.
