Possible PTSD, what diagnosis & treatment should we expect?

DP has finally reached out for help with mental health, initial GP call has suggested PTSD as the cause, stemming from finding his mum who had passed away suddenly, around 4 years ago. he has a nurse appointment this week, and an assessment appointment with the talking therapies team at the end of this month.

Looking for experiences of the process to expect from this point, so I can get a better understanding of how best to support.

Feeling a bit lost at the moment with it, as my instinct is to try and help, by 'fixing' things, and it kills me that I can't fix this. So proud of DP for actually reaching out for help, so I want to be able to help him as much as I can through the process.

I have ptsd (caused by nhs) I still couldn't get treatment easily. Originally I was given cbt which was absolutely useless. Then nothing for many years and eventually 4 years on a waiting list (10 years from original trauma and request for support) I had emdr. I was very sceptical but it has really helped although not solved all my problems. Partly because of time past since trauma and Partly because I'm continually retraumatised as I have to have medical care due to the disability they caused. But definitely was worth it.

TF- CBT or EMDR. Medication can also be useful.

Would you recommend getting counseling privately, seperate to the NHS treatments? Aware that there might be a wait to access anything other than medication, and DP doesn't want to be on any medication long term, but is open to any recommendations from the health team.

Yes 100% go private if you can as it's very likely there will be a long waiting list for NHS treatment and you might not be offered a choice of therapists.
I had EMDR treatment, which I knew nothing about beforehand, but happy to provide more info on this if you would like?

I second EMDR but it is expensive to have it privately. I’ve been trying to access via IAPT for more than a year now and still waiting,

I self referred in June, started CBT in Aug & now just starting EMDR for PTSD. This is all NHS services & I was surprised the wait wasn't much longer.

To update this, he went through the assessments, was told he most definitely needed therapy, and let him know he was now on an 11 month waiting list...

He was put on Sertraline, but had a bad reaction so was taken off again after 10 days so back to square 1 really...

Now looking into private counseling.

I was diagnosed with PTSD after a big car accident and was given therapy through an early insurance payment.
It was essentially exposure therapy. I had to relay what happened over and over again until it lost its power. I’m not sure how effective it was because I definitely have a block for trauma in my memory and I still freak out at the smallest things when I’m a passenger in a car.

Crocsake · 03/02/2025 21:44

Oh, I guess what I had was EDMR. I didn’t know that’s what it was called.
