How much do you spend on your vice per month?

How much do you spend on something you really, really don't need to buy? DH drinks beer and wine regularly. (I don't regularly, maybe one or max. two bottles a month). I got an e-reader for Christmas and am wondering how much I can self-justify spending per month... I'm telling myself as long as I don't go over the cost of his wine....

Do you (try to) set yourself a limit or what do you consider a reasonable limit to spend on frivolity?

Um.
Well I have two retired ponies as pets. In fairness they cost about as much as my two cats (more that my cats are expensive, though the ponies are fairly cheap relatively speaking) and I’m training for an Ironman triathlon.
So too much?
But it’s all relative, I work two jobs to afford my lifestyle and go without pretty much anything else to do so, and have no dependants (animals aside). But no one really needs to do an Ironman!
How much disposable income do you have and what other commitments and hobbies do you have?
Hundreds a month on books would seem excessive to me but likewise what I spend on my hobbies would probably seem the same to others 🤷‍♀️

I don't have hobbies. I have DC with hobbies!

I don't have a vice. I spend 7.99 on my audible subscription per month, I have a massage every month (£42) and I have my hair done every 2 months (£30) Sometimes I buy some real books, otherwise that's about it!

I lead a very quiet life.

I used to spend £80 a month on wine. Now that money stays in my purse.

AllTooWellTV · 14/01/2025 20:49

Mine is probably books and no more than £20-£30 across Audible, book beat, kindle books and physical books.

Probably thousands 😬

I really like travel, luxury hotels, high-end skincare, and expensive pets.

I need to massively rein it in.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/01/2025 20:51

I don't think anything is a 'vice'. I buy what I can afford to try and get through the month. I guess everything bar bills and tax and travel costs could be a vice. I mean we could live on porridge and water. Wouldn't be much of a life though.

Not me, but oh smokes, £85 a week on the Ocado shop

Sinkintotheswamp · 14/01/2025 20:53

I love my Spotify family premium and my weekend newspaper delivery.

I don't drink, go out or have holidays.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 14/01/2025 20:56

We go out a lot, mostly locally but on average one big night out a month. When I think about it, we probably spend approx. £300 on beer/wine a month (in pubs/bars)

My vice (hobby?) is the gym and I spend £160 a month on gym membership and weekly PT sessions.

Not sure which I enjoy more - going to the gym or going to the pub 😁

Ponderingwindow · 14/01/2025 20:58

I don’t think reading counts as a vice. Nor does any other hobby that contributes positively to your mental health.

how much do I waste on take out coffees and little treats which I would count as a vice? Far more than most people could possibly budget, but I can technically afford it and I do make sure I keep it in check.

how much do I spend on my hobbies? Recently too much so I am going on a bit of a cleanse. I have plenty of supplies and am going to try not to buy anything new for a bit.

jhar · 14/01/2025 21:09

I read a lot.

I pay prime for the family, whatever that is. 85 a year?

Then I just use prime reading. First reads. And then maybe a couple a month or the daily deals 99p.

How much are you reading that would equate to wine? Even if I ordered a book a day on 99p. That wouldn't be far off a bottle of wine a week.

I just look for the deals and do that.

What were you spending on books before the kindle? Use that as a guide

Lovelycupofcoffee · 14/01/2025 21:32

£280 a month on horse riding lessons . Absolutely not giving this up and if I had lots more money I’d buy a horse.

£85/week on cigarettes?

Serencwtch · 14/01/2025 22:01

Another one with 2 horses.

I don't actually know how much I spend on them altogether - I sacrifice everything else in order to keep them - no car, holidays, live in mobile home/chalet.

They're worth every penny & every hour of (min wage) overtime.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/01/2025 22:09

20 pounds a week on alchohol

squirrelnutcartel · 15/01/2025 00:05

My only vice is my phone and that costs £10 a month for my sim only contract.

I don't drink, smoke or go out, apart from the odd coffee shop.
