Books that make you a better person

Since having my son 6 years ago I've stopped reading. I remember being my most interesting, and interested when I devoured books. I was listening to an incredible woman, Evy Pompouras, on the Diary of a CEO podcast today and it has inspired me to start reading again. She is incredibly inspiring, but I prefer to not be glued to tech or podcasts. Can anyone recommend me some books that you've genuinely learnt from? That are inspiring or thought provoking? I feel like my brain is slowly dying from staring at my phone so much!

I don't read much these days, I tend to read quite accessible (eg not too high brow or technical) non fiction. There's a reason I don't read much-I'm tired, I don't get much time, I read in bed then fall asleep. I can't manage anything too deep or that requires too much attention. Recent ones I've enjoyed are the body by bill Bryson, food for life by Tim Spector, and I'm currently reading rangan chattergee's newest book about making changes that last.

Bit of a cliche, but the bible is a pretty thought provoking read even if you are not a believer.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
Babel by R. F. Kuang
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

These are books that are quite short/easy to read but have made me contemplate them for quite a long time afterwards.

All of Katie Piper's books. Not quite as high brow as some of the amazing suggestions on here but they're easy reading and truly inspiring.
I went through a massive self help binge at one point but my brain has gone completely blank! I will come back if I think of anything really good and loving all the suggestions on here to add to my list!!!

I have Evy Pompouras' book. It's called 'Becoming Bulletproof ' and it's great

Recently read 'A Book of Secrets' by Derren Brown and found it really comforting and challenging at the same time

'Wintering' by Katherine May - excellent for learning to rest properly and go easier on yourself, especially at this time of year

Although it's a straightforward tale, The Midnight Library really stayed with me and made me think about all my life choices with a chunk of gratitude thrown in!

Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada

How to Stop Time by Matt Haig

When I was in health care The Diving Bell and the Butterfly radically changed how I cared for people

Wintering and The Christmas Chronicles have changed how I approach Winter and it's now my favourite season of the year

I was going to suggest this too. It changed my life.

101 Essays by Brianna Weist.
As the title suggests, the book is broken down into short readings (rather than "essays"). It offers some real words of wisdom & due to the short readings, it should be easy to get into.
