What happened to face masks?

As in the skincare face masks and not the pandemic ones.

When I was younger face masks used to be cream based or clay or mud stuff that you put on your face and you clean it off.

Now it appears as if most of face masks are all sheet type of face masks and when you open the packet you get a flimsy paper thing dripping in liquid and then you have to open it up while it nearly tears and then the holes hardly fit around your facial features. It also forces to to sit and lie back or lie down where as the cream based stuff and you could potter around. Great if you have time to relax but sometimes you are not even allowed to sit down for 5 minutes. There's always someone trying to grab your attention and then the paper masks falls off your face if you get up.

Are there any masks that are not sheet based? Most of them seems to be like that.

I'm not familiar with that shop. But more mainstream or high street shops or pharmacies or grocery shops - like boots, Tesco, etc

There’s still loads?? Usually in a tube or pot intended for multiple uses. You can get a rubber thing to put over sheet masks to hold them in place too.

Kiehls is a mainstream brand. Available in John Lewis etc. Has its own shops on the high street. There’s definitely even one at Kings Cross train station!

also boots and supermarkets still do lots of face mask. I think you are being a bit obtuse here

samlovesdilys · 13/01/2025 20:55

Go to Superdrug...they have loads!!

MrBiscuits24 · 13/01/2025 20:55

Superdrug or boots have loads.

CatamaranViper · 13/01/2025 20:56

I think every shop I've looked in have them.
Boots, superdrug, home bargains, Asda, Tesco etc... they're the only ones I buy

Starlightstarbright4 · 13/01/2025 20:58

I got a load in honebargains

Vettrianofan · 13/01/2025 21:02

You can get them in Tesco too.

MagneticSquirrel · 13/01/2025 21:03

What sheet masks are you buying that they don’t stay on when you walk around?

I find they stick to your my well and I can move around, get ready, do my hair or household stuff as usual without the faff of something setting and then having to wash it off for ages! The Garnier ones stay on really well and so fast you can use them in the morning!

CandyCane457 · 13/01/2025 21:18

There’s loads! I get Boots own brand cucumber clay mask- it’s lovely. The list is endless of how many different ones you can get. TK Maxx always seems to have loads as well.

Soubriquet · 13/01/2025 21:20

I used to love a good face mask but I dare not use one now. Last time I used one (ok was over 15 years ago but still), I had an allergic reaction that caused my face and throat to swell

purplecorkheart · 13/01/2025 21:33

I am in Ireland and in my local area I find similar issues with my local stores. Any of the supermarkets have sheet masks at best but 2 out of the 4 have none.

The local pharmacies may have one cream mask opinion each but to be fair to them they are happy to order anything for you However it is mainly sheet masks that you can buy locally.

Ted27 · 13/01/2025 21:37

Body Shop have several, Lush have some nice fresh ones

Branster · 13/01/2025 21:57

They're everywhere. Plus Amazon.
You can't beat a deep cleansing face mask that you wash wash off with a warm flannel!
As regards sheet masks, you can get a reusable silicone mask (Amazon) to apply over the sheet mask with loops over the ears that keeps everything in place whilst you get on with other things. I wouldn't wear that with other people about but it does the job.
Sheet masks are like marmite. The slimy feel, some can be really fiddly to unwrap and apply without tearing. The more expensive ones are not as problematic.

Branster · 13/01/2025 21:59

@Soubriquet that's really scary, how awful for you. Did you ever find out which ingredients caused this reaction?

Theemperorsnewshoes · 13/01/2025 22:03

I never use sheet masks.
My favourite are Sisley or Kate Somerville. REN also do a good one.

Justdancinginthedark · 13/01/2025 22:04

I love 7th Heaven peel off face masks. They also have mud ones. They are less than £1 in Home Bargains, the Range and B&M.

IWantToBeADCC · 13/01/2025 22:17

I use Pai Resurrection Girl, I love it, I have to be really careful about what I use as my skin is so reactive but this is fantastic and calms it down.

REN is another I’d like to try as they have good reviews.

No!

I have a skin reactive rash allergy to Elastoplast, and the face mask at the time was the peeling kind so I always assumed it was something like that. The doctors never bothered to investigate so now I just keep safe and avoid them. It’s a shame cos I loved peeling them off
