Ammonia smell and taste from biscuits.

I've had polyps for years. They were found incidentally, when I had bleeding from my throat. For years I've had nasal steroid spray to keep them at bay.

I also have oral steroids regularly as I have asthma.

I've had trouble with taking the nasal spray, as it keeps causing infections, so I have to keep stopping it.

I saw an ENT consultant last summer, who diagnosed me with grade 4 bilateral polyps. I'd just finished oral steroids (for asthma), so as they hadn't shrunk, she said I needed to have them removed and arranged a CT scan, then arrange a date for removal.

I've since had the results of the scan and she is no longer going to remove them. The scan showed extensive inflammatory changes to the mucosal layer of the paranasal sinuses, and needs expert management from rhinology (I thought ENT was the right place, so not sure what will happen to the polyps now).

I've not been able to eat brie cheese for years, as the taste and smell of ammonia is over-powering.

I've just had a couple of Cheddars Cheese Thins biscuits and was overwhelmed by the ammonia smell and taste and cannot get rid of it. I used to eat these biscuits before and they were fine. No one else can taste or smell it and think I'm imagining it, which I'm definitely not.

Could it be related to the nasal issues, or has anyone else noticed it?

It's definitely your nasal issues. I've had a really bad case of sinusitis and the inside of my nose when I blow it stinks like rotting meat/eggs. It sounds like a similar thing.
I guess you'll have to avoid cheese. Many people find its smell overpowering even without issues.
It's a shame, but I don't really know what else you can do. I hope it doesn't affect too many other foods/tastes?

Thanks, you poor thing, sinusitis is such a bugger, pain and horrible smells. I hope you recover soon, it's really annoying to smell horrible things.

@WellThisIsStupid ah, thank you. Yeah, it's so gross! Luckily my taste isn't affected, but I did lose my taste entirely over Xmas. I hope you get better soon too. X

I've heard about smell training? Like introducing strong smells gradually, individually. I think that's for people who lost their taste/smell. But never tried it!
