is it odd to want to send my parents a monthly gift in the post ?

Just something little, like a nice box of fudge or an afternoon tea to enjoy at home. They are now elderly, my dad especially is looking quite old and aged. Just want to give them something nice.

I've never done this before. Would it look odd to do this every month at this point in their lives ? I'm not looking to spend £££ as I don't have that, rather just £20/£30 gift each time.

I see them a lot and could give them the gifts but would rather suprise them in the post.

Thoughts ?

and ideas for what I can send them plse.

I think it's a really cute idea. Try it and see. If they don't like it, stop.
I love the Gower Cottage brownies and have sent them in the post a few times to people. They're so good! They do gluten free etc for people with dietary requirements too.
Look up letterbox gifts - it could be wine, sweets, flowers like previous poster said. There's book club options that send out a monthly book and bar of chocolate. Or subscription to a magazine - my mum likes Good Housekeeping and enjoys getting those.

What a lovely idea!
I used to send my mum postcards of family life when she was in a home far away. All done online, PostSnap I think it was called.

Our DD 26 sends us postcards all the time, it's our family thing and I love it.

That said I would also appreciate tiny gifts, a miniature box of artesian chocolates, a really lovely tea towel, a good grips potato peeler (older people seem to have rubbish peelers) a naice pen, pretty coasters, vintage bead necklace from eBay or Vinted.

Like an upmarket Christmas stocking but all year round.

Think this is a lovely idea also even the odd postcard that you pick up when you're somewhere different was much appreciated by my dm .

I think that's a lovely idea OP. I was thinking of doing the same for my MIL last year but I didn't get round to it and then she suddenly passed away. I wish I had done it sooner.

Great Bakes are a fab brownie company, I used to send them to my DD when she was at uni. Magazine or book subscriptions are also fun if they enjoy reading. What about Hello Fresh or similar if they cook, not sure if you can do a one off or once a fortnight etc.

FrenchandSaunders · 13/01/2025 13:15

Oh yes postcards. I've got a great app on my phone that allows you to send a photo/montage as a postcard.

That sounds so lovely!

Northern Brownies and Konditor ship brownies nationwide (😋)

Fudge Kitchen for fudge ~ again nationwide delivery.

Bloom and Wild do lovely flowers 💐 I've heard mixed reviews but personally I use them often and have had no issues.

I hope my children see this thread! It's a lovely idea, OP.

It's a lovely idea. I have had Xmas gifts that were in effect a treat in the post every mont and I always looked forward to receiving them

We used to send a monthly delivery of beer to DW's great-uncle in Scotland.
He was an Englishman (married to a Scot) and missed Fullers and Youngs beer.

GreyAreas · 13/01/2025 13:17

I think it sounds lovely. Only you know them though. If they are frugal or self-effacing they might not understand why you are doing it, or feel it is a waste (my dmil would) or that they should reciprocate. Go for it.

Ringtons biscuit hampers are delicious

Check out if there is a local wfh baker near you. We have a lovely young lady locally who delivers cakes, afternoon tea etc

I took to doing this as well with my parents! Can't remember the name of the app but it was a nice small surprise.

Lots of other good ideas here too.

What a lovely daughter you are. How nice to show them you treasure them

Tortielady · 13/01/2025 13:54

You can send them Fat Rascals and other treats from Bettys:

It's a lovely gesture. When our DDs went off to university I started sending them the occasional random treat through the post, and I'm still doing it now several years later. Just little things like a cute pair of socks, or a book I know they'd enjoy.
