What are your essentials when flying long haul,

im off to Costa Rica in a few weeks, I’ve never flown long haul before and I have a 14hr flight.

so far I have

noise cancelling ear buds
compression socks
playlists downloaded onto the phone
a neck cushion/beanbag thing,
I will also have a CPAP machine for sleep as I have OSA. So have a new mask.

abything else that would be good?

Do you have to apply for permission to use the CPAP machine before you fly?

A trip to Costa Rica sounds amazing😀

It varies from airline to airline.

Some are fairly permissive and only recommend a covering letter from a doctor, others only certain types/brands and there are sometimes caveats about power supply.

Fundamentally anyone planning on traveling with a CPAP device needs to check the website of the airline(s) they are planning to use.

All those changing their knickers - why not wear pads? I often do 24 hours flights (with short layovers) and I just put knicker-liner pads in which I can change every so often to have that 'clean knicker' feel without having to get undressed in airport/aeroplane toilets.

SheilaFentiman · 14/01/2025 09:55

If you can use the loo on the plane you don’t have to be a contortionist to change your knickers. Go to loo, so pull down trackie bums and knickers to the floor, slide feet out, slide feet into clean knickers and back into trackies, pick up dirty knickers and shove into cardi pocket/wash bag, pull up new knickers and trackies as you stand up.

Sleeping pill and good eye mask. Also I wear pj's as base layer so can take off outer clothing after take off. In my hand luggage are weather appropriate clothes for wherever I'm going.

ParsnipPuree · 14/01/2025 09:59

And yes I agree business class if there's any way you can! Just back from South Africa and slept my normal hours with no jet lag!

FerretChops · 14/01/2025 10:00

Cuffed lounge pants - you don't want anything that may trail on the toilet floor! I wore a scamp and dude tracksuit which was comfortable

Put a light t shirt and shorts in hand luggage so you can change in the airport when you land so you're nice and cool

I went to the Seychelles in November so stressed about all this for ages!

Ooooh following with interest as we fly long haul in 6 weeks and I was wondering the same!

HJ40 · 14/01/2025 10:24

I agree with pp on the CPAP, you need to ensure you're compliant with everything you'll need to get through security AND check the specific airlines rules if you are hoping to use it onboard (unclear from the OP but I assume given the post is about the flight rather than the holiday).

Also make sure that you have in your hand luggage anything you would need for the first 24 hours in-country including paperwork, a change of clothes, sufficient toiletries/contact lenses/medication whatever, ideally enough to see you through the trip. Luggage getting lost does happen even though it's rare, and the idea of having to get replacement contact lenses abroad is one of my nightmares!

Yes to this! I always take a few vests / t-shirts, some shorts, flip flops, spare underwear and a bikini in my hand luggage as one of my worst nightmares is being stuck in a hot country in the clothes I have been travelling in for the last however many hours!!!

TheHorticulturalHussy · 14/01/2025 10:39

Compression socks.

Fluff111 · 14/01/2025 10:49

Anti bac wipes for tray tables and armrests
Headphones
Moisturiser
Lip Balm
Large Pashmina
Clean knickers
Pen
Phone / iPad chargers
Eye Mask
Toothbrush / Toothpaste - Superdrug have a great miniatures collection
Meds & Paracetamol
Deodorant - don’t spray in toilet or the smoke alarm may go off! Believe me!
Comb
Compression Flight Socks

NewbieSM · 14/01/2025 10:50

Don't forget a portable charger for any devices. I often also pack a large but lightweight cashmere pashmina to use as a blanket, I think the airline ones are gross. Definitely yes to the antibacterial wipes for your seat, the bathroom etc. travel adapter in case luggage goes missing

Mercurysinretrograde · 14/01/2025 11:11

I pack endless nonsense but I always use:

Small face cleanser and mini sponge
mini moisturizer
roll on deodorant
eye drops
airpods
sweatshirt in backpack
perfume (sample size)
small dry shampoo.

The airline should provide a toothbrush, toothpaste and lip balm but I prefer my own.

This happened to us the first time we went to Thailand! Literally had only the clothes we were stood up in! I had to go and try buy a bikini from a local shop, which as a well padded woman with massive tits in a country full of very petite women, was not much fun! Thankfully clothes in Thailand are cheap.

We only ever take hand luggage when we travel now.
