Help - Getting chefs clothes clean!

TamworthTigress · 12/01/2025 15:05

DD started a chef's apprenticeship in September, she's loving it. Since the start of December she's been working part time to supplement her earnings in a pub, usually sat/sun.

She's asked me to ask the MN massive how to get her cheffing uniform properly clean and smelling fresh after a Sunday lunch service when she generally reeks of beef fat and other lovely smells. She's tried washing on a 60 and also bio powder but her clothes are still coming out smelling greasy and a bit yuk.. I did suggest a pre-soak but while
that works on the trousers and jacket, her aprons still really smell.

Any suggestions?

Apply Ace on each and every stain then put n a normal wash (40 or 60C).
It's magic!

Thank you! It's as much the greasy smell as the stains, it just won't shift.

DH washes his jackets on 90, apron’s and trousers on 60, but sometimes depending how bad they smell aprons in 90 as well, he’s adds a scoop of vanish to both washes as well

Try soda crystals in the wash as they act as a degreaser. Or soak them in a soda crystals solution before washing. Fabulosa laundry sanitiser instead of fabric softener

Bio Ariel is very good with a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda

I put Ariel in the drum and the Bi carb in the drawer

I also add distilled white vinegar in the softener drawer

If you wash hotter than 40 then it kills the enzymes in the washing gel (I use gel) so it don't clean the stains as well

You could wash at 60 or 90 first then at 40 after

Ariel do a specific washing gel for whites which works very well

Thanks Branster, I’ve just told DH about this

KittenPause · 12/01/2025 15:22

Doesn't not don't

Any way bicarbonate of soda works wonders for my whites

Also washing powder, as opposed to gel, seems to work better. I have no scientific explanation for this and it may well be just in my head.
And it has to be bio detergent.
I wouldn't add any softener or any other fragranced additives but you could use the Detol (or whatever the main brand is) of laundry sanitizer.
Like another PP mentioned, the higher the temperature the better.

The persil Wonder Wash odour defy liquid is very good, has worked for me on some very smelly trainers!

Branster · 12/01/2025 15:28

@Barmcake I swear it's a magic potion! It even removes blood and wine.
For very, very, very difficult stains you'd need to re-apply.

dementedpixie · 12/01/2025 15:33

Powder detergent contains bleaches that liquids dont so it's more effective for stain removal. I also use bio plus laundry sanitiser if its stinky gym kit
