Can’t stand it!! Up at 6.30, then a wave of exhaustion hits at around 8pm and I can barely get ready for bed before I’m asleep. Then at 2am I’m suddenly wide awake…

Menopause?

hazelnutvanillalatte · 12/01/2025 03:46

Hopefully not, I’m 30!

If you sleep from 8 till 2 that gives you six hours. I am older than you at 56 but I only sleep for 5 hours a night as does my sister. It is just us. 8 hours is average but is just a range. Can you try going to bed a few minutes later each night to push back the time you wake up but if you are up just get on with things, watch tv and generally just start your day so you are not sitting fretting about not being asleep. As long as you are functioning during the day don’t worry but if you are exhausted all the time see your GP to maybe have some blood tests to see if anything could be causing the tiredness. Good luck!!

Are you drinking enough water? This happens to me if I'm dehydrated and it gets worse when the central heating is on drying everything out.

VaddaABeetch · 12/01/2025 04:20

This is how I sleep

At one time pre Industrial Revolution people had 2 sleeps. Went to bed. Slept 3/4 hours. Woke for 2, got up did stuff, then back to bed for another 3/4 hours. The problem is it doesn’t suit how we live our lives now.

To help though do you eat sugar? processed food? Caffeine or alcohol? All will have a detrimental effect on sleep, some people are more sensitive than others. You may need to dramatically cut back.

Me too! It’s the menopause for me - I’ve come off my hrt for various reason sadly. Magnesium sometimes works - have you tried this hazelnut?

paranoiaofpufflings · 12/01/2025 04:33

@Happytoday69 Menopause for me too. I'm on HRT but I don't think it's doing much for me at the moment. Not tried magnesium but I've heard a lot about it lately, think I will try it.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 12/01/2025 04:34

@VaddaABeetch Thanks, that’s interesting. No alcohol etc. it would be ok but it’s this annoying exhaustion which comes on so suddenly I can barely get to bed, and in the night I’m awake but not enough to get up. Feels like I’m losing ny entire evening and just not feeling great. Thinking about it more I think it’s probably stress related

Awake too. Worst thing is to lie there fretting. Just giving in to it, getting up to make a warm drink then reading can help to feel drowsy again.

paranoiaofpufflings · 12/01/2025 04:38

@hazelnutvanillalatte It could well be stress. Are you stressed at work? If you're running on adrenaline during working hours you could be coming home and "crashing". I've been in that position before. Made worse by a post-dinner slump. Try doing something physical around 8pm - go for a short walk after dinner, or some gentle yoga - just something to get your blood flowing without inducing more tiredness.
