Be honest.. do you judge people who don't tip? It now costs me £43 for a haircut and £38 for my nails doing which I don't begrudge at all because I want the person doing it to be on a good wage and cover all their overheads etc. But I work a minimum wage job so can't really afford to tip on top and I'm probably on a lot less per hour than them 😂. Just wondering if I'm secretly being judged for not tipping as it's expected or they don't think twice at not being tipped so would appreciate some replies from those in the industry!

I don't tip anyone ... There's a minimum wage now .. which I'm on .. I dont get tipped for doing my job .. they get paid, it's their job

Iamanunsafebuilding · 11/01/2025 17:00

I used to be a self-employed Nail Tech and I promise you I honestly never judged people who didn't tip me. Actually I reckon only about a third of my clients used to tip so it wasn't something I ever expected. Lots of my clients would give me a gift or a tip at Christmas but not throughout the year.

I set my prices at what I needed to so I made a profit, I didn't rely on tips. Please don't worry about it

Gosh it's never occured to me to tip my hairdresser 😳 feel bad now!! Though usually I was on the same wage as them and could only afford to get my hair done once a year.

@Iamanunsafebuilding that's made me feel loads better thank you! I tend to use a booking app for my nails and pre pay and then just dart out after to avoid the awkwardness (which is probably imagined on my part 😂) but I'm getting my hair done next week so wanted to garner opinions.

My dd2 is a spa therapist/nail tech and, while she appreciates tips, never expects them. Shes earning above nmw for her age and uses her tips for treats!

Berlinlover · 11/01/2025 17:41

I never tip as I think it’s patronising.

BobnLen · 11/01/2025 17:42

Why would you tip the hairdresser, there is another thread running on here about how well off they all are with fancy cars

rickandmorts · 11/01/2025 17:47

@weegiemum okay thank you for providing her perspective!

I don't tip!

rickandmorts · 11/01/2025 17:49

@BobnLen I actually have no idea why, growing up my family always tipped. DP says he always tips his barber too. I just thought it was expected in the industry but now I can't afford to I wanted to know how expected it was!

I think historically people did tip because there was no minimum wage.

cuppaonce · 11/01/2025 18:03

i used to be a nail tech and i never judged people who didn’t tip. Just pleased if any of my clients did !!

Bluevelvetsofa · 11/01/2025 18:34

My hairdressers prices have significantly increased. I know the price of everything has been raised, but it’s now a question of either having a haircut and not tipping, or halving the number of times I go, but tipping.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 11/01/2025 18:39

I dont tip. I dont see the point of it? UK pays a living wage.

festivemouse · 11/01/2025 18:42

I tip my nail tech occasionally when I've had something extra special on my nails (she does charge for nail designs but occasionally I tip if it's taken extra time!). I don't tip my hairdresser because it's so expensive and I'm often left waiting about.

My nail tech said she sometimes finds tips more awkward than not 😂 she said she never knows what to do! My hairdresser I think expects them, she always walks me to the till (even though they don't take payment themselves) but it's £100+ every 6 weeks, I'm not tipping too 😧

OurDreamLife · 11/01/2025 18:46

They are lucky people keep going back never mind getting tips. They are all over TikTok saying ‘Up your prices girlie 💕’ and then in the next video saying they have next to no bookings for January and February.

I stopped tipping when they started constantly rising their prices. Every single time I have my hair done (3-4 months) her prices go up so the tip has been swallowed up. The nail
salon make up prices on the spot so any spare change is needed to pay.
