Mobile phone charger

I have had my current mobile for four years. I had a very good fast charger which broke so I had to buy a new one. I bought a cheap one from a little independent shop not a phone shop and it wasn't a very fast charger so I went back to the shop to see if they could give me another one which I thought would be a bit quicker but it wasn't and the second one didn't charge anyway.

I was quite concerned because the phone was losing charge and I have no landline anymore so the mobile was by only phone and I thought if there was an emergency I need to have a working phone. In a panic I went to the EE shop just see what they could do about it and they said it is probably the phone not the charger because the phone is four years old and when it gets as old as that the charge gets slower and slower. However when I went to the Independent shop to buy the charger they told me that because he was a cheap one it wouldn't be very fast and if I wanted a faster charger I would have to pay a lot more which they don't have and I would have to go to a mobile phone shop.

I am wandering whether the EE shop told me it was the phone rather than the charger because they wanted me to purchase an upgraded phone and if I actually did buy a more expensive faster charger it would work properly I would be charging up my phone much faster. I do not buy my phone and have a SIM only contract I pay a contract over two or three years and so that's what they were trying to get me to do for an upgraded phone so I'm not quite sure what the situation is I wouldn't think that the EE shop would lie about it just to get me to upgrade my phone

It's probably a bit of both. Phoned stat to loose their ability hold charge. And yes you do have to pay more for a fast charger.

There is actually in my area a mobile phone repair shop so I might take it in there before going back to the EE shop to purchase the mobile phone that they think I should get because when I looked online it said reason for slow charging it's a poor quality charger or dust in the bottom of the phone where you plug the cable into it. I am not convinced that I need to upgrade my phone and lots of different shops say anything to a customer Justin make a sale and I think we call that hard sell you know let's tell the customer there's nothing we can do to repair her phone so she'll get a new one what a load of Tosh

Both. The phone is quite old and there will be wear and tear. An ageing battery is less able to hold charge as well or for as long plus the charging port might not hold the jack as firmly as it used to.

In my experience, cheap chargers and cables are generally a false economy. You get what you pay for, so get decent ones.

It could be time to think about upgrading your phone. They don't go on forever. They get slower and more clunky to use and charging difficulties can start to occur no matter what you do.

If you want to keep your phone for over 2-3 years then you need to get phone models where a phone repair shop can replace the battery as batteries have a limited lifespan.

However as it's your only phone then you could end up without a phone for a couple of days.

Also my charging cables don't last more than a couple of years. The actual fast chargers the cables attached to, last a long time. I think my oldest one is 7 years old.

Apart from what @Topseyt123 said lots of phone models don't receive security and operating system updates after 2-3 years. This means you can't install newer versions of some apps.

Though it depends on what you use your phone for whether this is acceptable to you or not.

If a phone lasts 4 years it's usually done reasonably well, I would also check it's still getting security updates. I bought DS a fast charger for Christmas, it was an Apple one and cost £16 which was on offer from £19. If buying on Amazon, Anker and Belkin are good brands for phone charging accessories, I usually filter out these two so I don't get all the cheap crap come up.

The reason why I have not changed my phone in so long is because I use it for YouTube and watch some TV on the hub because I can decide when to watch and do it at your own convenience and I watch YouTube but the only thing I didn't like about the phone is that when you're on the phone speaking to someone and somebody tries to call you you should be able to swipe and put your current call on hold and answer the new coral by swiping but my phone would never allow me to do that so if I swipe the new call it wouldn't work so they were would eventually hang up thinking I wasn't there

You can't swipe to answer an incoming call while already on a phone call because most smartphones are designed to automatically activate "call waiting" functionality, which alerts you to the new call with a visual notification, but you need to take specific actions (usually pressing a dedicated button) to switch between the calls, preventing accidental interruption of your current conversation

Accessing the new call:
To answer the incoming call while on another call, you typically need to press a specific button on your phone (depending on the device) to put the current call on hold and then answer the new one.

My very first mobile was a non smartphone Nokia and it did the job for making a phone call and that's all it was good for because really you only need a mobile for emergency phone calls why would you want the internet😂

My "official" charger is a lot faster than a spare I bought from a local phone shop. When I charge my phone on the proper charger my lock screen, as well as showing the little charging symbol, has the word "fastcharge" underneath.

thismummydrinksgin · 11/01/2025 08:23

It could be either but if it's an iPhone you can check the battery's health. Anything under 80% Apple recommend replacement. I'd also make sure you're not buying dodgy chargers as they can be a fire hazard .

LovelyDaaling · 11/01/2025 08:25

Not sure if it's the same for androids but on iPhones, you can go into settings, scroll down and select 'battery', select 'battery health' and see how your battery is doing.

By the way, I recently bought a Samsung phone and it did not come with a charger - I had to buy that separately.

They say it's to keep the cost down, and everyone already has a charger...🙄

Neither do Apple, these two brands have the most expensive phones and don't even supply this.

PerkyOchrePeer · 11/01/2025 11:00

been to the mobile phone repair shop and they said it's the charger not the mobile and they have sold me quite an expensive charger and I'm sitting in a cafe charging it and in the space of five minutes it's gone from 19% to 30% I'm so I telephone EE and they said we are very sorry that the girl in the shop told you to get a new upgrade and a man on the phone from EE agreed was me that she should never have done that because quite clearly my phone is not an issue and in the repair shop the guy behind the counter said to me we do not consider a phone that's four years old and old phone and if they're telling you it's an old phone and you need an upgrade it's just because they want you to get a new phone because they get permission every phone they sell to a new customer they get comission. Bloody cheek 😡
