Would you be prepared to travel for a NHS dentist?

My local dentist went private and if i didn't take a monthly plan they said I couldn't get treatment there.
I couldn't afford that as I'm entitled to free dental.
I found another dentist but to get there it's a bus for 15 mins to town
Then the train for 40 mins then a 5 min walk to the dentist.
It's just the thought of how anxious I get before hand and having to travel all that way back after a filling or extraction.
My local dentist was a 5 min walk away.

I've registered anyway and had my first check up.
I don't need another for 6 months but it's the thought of possibly needing treatment and having to travel.

I drive 45 minutes there and same back for mine.

Well that's a shame. In your shoes, I'd be tempted to stay with your old dentist. The journey to the new one sounds expensive and time consuming and presumably the new one could also decide to go private.

Is it drivable instead?

I used to drive 40 mins one way for mine to make sure I had an NHS dentist!

theyraitor · 09/01/2025 21:15

It only costs me £6 to get there on the train as it's a local train route.
I don't drive unfortunately

A friend of a friend has a Birmingham based dentist and travels from Wales to have appointments! I am lucky my dentist is about twenty minutes away on one bus. I realise I am very lucky.

My mum and dad drive 50 miles. Seems mad to me when they have plenty of money and have a non NHS one in the village

Beezknees · 09/01/2025 22:02

Yeah, I would travel for an NHS dentist to be honest. Check ups are what, twice a year? So unless you need work doing you don't have to do it that often.

Keep the dentist.

I travel 50 mile round trip to my NHS dentist - I did move and couldn't get one in the new area.

Where I am now, an NHS dentist is rarer than a golden goose egg.

I'm still registered at my NHS dentist where I used to live 120 miles away.
