I love to visit museums / churches exhibitions particular pre 20th century history. I've got a day in central London next week, any ideas of where I might not have been.

I'll caveat by saying I've visited quite a lot of places!

From memory I've been:
The Temple
Westminster Abbey
St Paul's
Portrait and National Gallery
War rooms
Kensington Palace
Hampton court
Tower of London
Huntarien museum (sp?)
Postal museum
Transport
Charles Dickens
Imperial war museum
British museum

Greenwich is too far for the time I have next week.

Any hidden gems? Don't need to be big ones! Or new exhibitions?

I always worry the foundling will just be too upsetting!

But definitely ones to add to my list

I went to the Foundling Museum yesterday - I recently found out my 5x great grandmother was left there as a baby.

I cried my eyes out, but I wouldn’t have missed it.

Charles Dickens’ House is a short walk from there - that was really excellent. I felt like he’d just walked out of some of the rooms.

Leighton House and Sambourne House

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/01/2025 21:18

Charterhouse is well worth a visit - https://thecharterhouse.org/
St Bride's church and All Hallows by the Tower - both in the City of London - have very interesting free museums in their crypts.

The Charterhouse has been living the nation’s history since 1348. In that time it has served as a monastery, private mansion, boys school and an almshouse. % %

If you are in central London- nr St Paul’s, there’s a church called St Mary aldermary, watling st. again a wren church, it has a great cafe, and you sit in the church itself. A great chilled space and good coffee etc. It’s stilll a real church, but during the week it is open to the city. I was married here.
