My husband has had his thumb slammed in the door by one of our kids in an accident. Ive put ice on it but don't know what to do or what's serious. There's a lot of blood under the nail,

This happened to me in July (car door)

The impact was on the nail bed.

Blood under the nail was about 25% of the nail and I was told by a nurse (went to a walk in clinic) that it had to be 50% in order for them to drain the blood.

The nail fell off about 2 months later and now it is about 75% grown back.

It takes time but if you leave it nature takes its course unless he needs to have it drained as it can be very painful if the pressure builds too much.

First post nailed it.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thank you! That's calmed us down

It's pretty painful but as soon as the impact bruising went down, there wasn't any pain. My family really enjoyed my weekly nail updates as it gradually fell apart, fell off and is now growing back! :)

This. You'll know from the pain/pressure if it needs to be drained. I had to have mine drained and I couldn't sleep with the pain/pressure.

Sorry one thing I forgot - the draining needs to be done ideally within 48 hours according to the nurse I saw because after that time it has clotted and dried up.

I did this years ago, but it was a car door. I almost fainted from the pain.
I had a build up of blood under the nail, and drained it myself. Nail came off in the end.
