Can anyone help me find the author and origins of this Christmas themed poem please?

The background is that when my sister and I were at primary school, we were given readings to do at the Christmas carol service. Mine was a fairly standard bible reading, and my sister's was this poem. My dad recorded us doing our readings on a cassette tape, which is why I have all the words. This was in 1972.

Despite much Googling, I have been unable to find the poem anywhere since then. It's possible it may have been written by someone at the school, although I think that's unlikely. So if anyone can shed any light on the origins of the poem, I'd be very grateful!

It's Christmas again! The frosty air rings
With gay sounds that only Christmas time brings.
Glad voices of carollers warm the chill air.
And church bells are chiming for joy everywhere.

It's Christmas again! The stars still look down.
The same stars that shone over Bethlehem town.
Long centuries ago at the birth of a king,
When angels came earthwards, their tidings to bring.

It's Christmas again! Oh let it be bright!
Rejoice and be merry from morning to night.
But in all that you do, in the gifts that you bring
Remember the Christ child, the manger born king.

Remember the Christ who was born on this day,
In time long ago, in a land far away.
For he is our saviour, the lord of all living,
God's gift and the reason for all Christmas giving.

Thank you!

Maybe you need to find school poetry books or educational resources from that era?

SoMuchToBits · 09/01/2025 09:59

@Snowmanscarf yes that might be a good idea!

Could the teacher have written it?

SoMuchToBits · 09/01/2025 10:21

@rbe78 I think that's correct, as despite extensive Googling I have found nothing that matches. That's why I thought posting here might help, in case anyone from my generation remembers the same poem from their schooldays!

A long shot I know, but worth a try...

Don't know it, but it's quite sweet. Teacher may have written it.

SoMuchToBits · 09/01/2025 10:24

@Kittybelle123 it's possible that one of the teachers from the school wrote it, but not sure how I would find out now.

I think it's very likely to have been written by someone at the school; just about every school I ever worked in had someone who wrote poems or composed music and lyrics for productions.

Pyjamatimenow · 09/01/2025 10:27

You get lots of resources that are paper based that teachers write themselves. Sometimes it’s even bright kids’ work that gets kept. I picked up an excellent short story that was written by a year 9 kid decades ago and been photocopied a million times over the years.

SoMuchToBits · 09/01/2025 10:28

I definitely remember one of the teachers at the school writing new tunes for some of the hymns we sang, so it's quite possible a teacher wrote the poem.

I thought I would try googling the verses separately and the third verse is quoted in a 1965 North Carolina newspaper. Alas without saying who it is by! the text is all mushed together but its about half way down after "DICK JAMES" (googling that name led to the Beatles Christmas album which was a fun dead end)

Thank you @Fluffythefish that is the exact 3rd verse, which suggests it was an existing poem and not written by any of the school staff. I'll try searching for the other verses!
