What can be done about a niggling ankle?

I sort of jarred it a few months ago, the pain wasn’t and hasn’t ever been too much to bare but it persistently swells and then eases.
Didnt seem worth bothering a doctor for, there’s nothing they can do anyway, and it was never bad enough for A&E, we don’t really have a minor injuries place nearby - I’ve tried to ice it, tried to rest it, tried alternating heat and ice. Nothing seems to stop the swelling. Day to day it’s not really a bother, I don’t need to take any painkillers, it’s only when I sit with pressure on my ankle or put anything on my feet that isn’t trainers but it’s annoying me now.
dh and I are going away next week so I tried on a nice pair of boots - no chance.

Go and see your GP.

Some areas have a specific musculoskeletal service so that you can see a physio team without having to see your GP. I’m sure that your GP can point you to this if it’s available.

Get an x ray. I know someone who was like this and turned out to be a fracture that needed a boot.

SharonEllis · 09/01/2025 08:25

Definitely see the gp. Noone can diagnose from here.

Mindymomo · 09/01/2025 08:29

GP’s go on loads of courses so they can tell when examining what’s going on, I would also request an X-ray, your ankle is swelling for a reason.

Get it checked but if soft tissue damage it can take months before it settles and even then can give you some discomfort at times, so it may never be as good pre-injury. You might also find that some shoes make it worse and there are some styles (damaged my foot / ankle soft tissue) that I've had to bin, as they aggravate my foot.

I badly sprained my ankle about a year ago and it took about 6 months before it was ok again. I found pilates helped a bit so if it isn't painful to do so, you could try some gentle heel raises (go into tiptoes). Maybe start holding onto something and progress to doing it without support.
Obviously this will cause more damage if there is a fracture and I am not a health professional so could be advising something terrible.

BellissimoGecko · 09/01/2025 08:45

Voltarol and ice. See a physio if that doesn't help.

I went over my ankle two months ago and I have exactly the same - persistent low-level inflammation, can't wear certain boots, very tender in some positions. Physio says I have tendinitis.

Arghhh okay perhaps the GP, I just presumed they wouldn’t be able to do anything as they can’t see inside my foot. Thanks everyone. I’m annoyed with myself for falling over like an idiot but more annoyed that it just won’t settle.

I was at the skeletal clinic yesterday.. Fell 2 years ago. Assumed sprained.. Stayed poofy and sore for at least 9 months. Year later fell down stairs. This time it went black. X ray showed 2 old fractures... From when I didn't bother to have it seen... Fell 7 weeks ago. Now have ligament and soft tissue damage to ankle and possible permanent nerve damage to calf.. Please get it seen to op. Get a GP telephone appointment and they can send you for xray (appointment not sit and wait. ) been in pain for 2 years because I didn't get it checked...

They can refer you to people who can see inside your foot!

Oh fucking hell @Tinselinthewhoopsiebasket - what a disaster 😩
yeah okay i’ll Call them tomorrow. It’s just not been a priority because I’m not really in pain with it unless I cross my legs and put pressure on it sideways or dare to wear anything other than trainers or other flat shoes and I rarely want to wear anything different so it’s not really caused much drama.
