Would you report this to police?

I’m going to deliberately vague but I’m interested to know if you think I should report this.
it happened over 15+ years ago and was at work (NHS)
I was pinned up against a wall by a man and shouted at ‘in my face’. Another male colleague mouthed at me to ‘run’. I did, I was very upset and left work. I reported it internally but was made to feel he had his own reasons for the behaviour. He apologised but it was not genuine and he was intimidating. I didn’t report to the police as it left me feeling anxious and scared.

is it worth reporting now or should I keep it buried?

I am not sure what would be the point of reporting it to the Police 15 years later to be honest, I doubt that there would be anything they could do.

Mingenious · 08/01/2025 12:51

What would it achieve?

2dogsandabudgie · 08/01/2025 12:55

Was he a patient? Did the other colleague try to intervene? Not sure the police could do anything now.

Cranberry2020 · 08/01/2025 12:56

He was a healthcare professional

ViciousCurrentBun · 08/01/2025 12:57

I would ask why the sudden decision? Do you know if he still works in healthcare?

Meadowfinch · 08/01/2025 13:02

What do you want to achieve?

Would reporting him make you feel better? Can you still contact the other HCP who was a witness, and would he be prepared to make a statement? What do you think the NHS trust would do?

If the man is still employed, and you are able to get a witness statement to corroborate your evidence, I suspect the NHS trust would issue him with a warning. The only way it would be helpful to anyone else is if he has done the same to someone else, and the trust are looking for an excuse to get rid of him.

Unfortunately, this occurred over 15-years ago, I suspect there is near enough zero evidence now. Should've reported at the time. I'd advise you move on tbh, as you'll achieve nothing but pain and misery for yourself.

Notaflippinclue · 08/01/2025 13:17

No

please don’t judge that I didn’t. It wasn’t the done thing at the time.

I don't think there's much to investigate in a man shouting at you 15 years ago.

CautiousLurker01 · 08/01/2025 13:30

Not sure what you’d report him for? Assault? In which case the statute of limitations is 3 years, so even if you have CCTV or witness evidence it’s non-prosecutable.

I’m afraid you’ve left it too late and it was internally investigated at the time. You need to let it go.

ShadowsOfTheDays · 08/01/2025 13:23

Well his behaviour was vile. Unprofessional. Abusive.

But why did you leave it so long?

Perhaps he's still behaving like that now to other colleagues? Do you still see him?

orangewasp · 08/01/2025 13:33

No, it was horrible thing to happen but is now too long ago and there's likely to be too little evidence for them to do anything about it.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 08/01/2025 13:34

Yes, at the appropriate time.
15 years later, no I would not.

user1492757084 · 08/01/2025 13:35

A terrible thing to remember. It was frightening.
I don't think you have any recourse now.

Try not to let him invade your mind any longer.

Do you think he has changed his ways?

ShadowsOfTheDays · 08/01/2025 13:38

Right @SugarPlumpFairyCakes but is it, 15 years later, actually a matter for the law, and will the police investigate?

Likely not.

Kashmiri24 · 08/01/2025 13:38

I don’t think anything can be done about this situation so many years later, unless he continues to work in healthcare and physically intimidates his colleagues. Then, perhaps, your complaint will provide another piece of evidence that can be added to the documents being submitted to his governing body?

Redrosesposies · 08/01/2025 13:41

I don't honestly think you will achieve anything by reporting him to the police.
You said you reported it internally and it sounds like it was brushed under the carpet as these things often still are, but it is clearly something that is still on your mind so I would perhaps see about some sort of counselling that might help you to move on.

Oreyt · 08/01/2025 13:41

Maybe see a counsellor or something.

I understand you still being upset but I think it's too long ago for them to do anything about.

AwaitingFreedom · 08/01/2025 13:42

No to reporting. Why would the police bother wasting manpower on a shouty incidence from 15 years ago when they aren't responding to burglaries or shoplifting that's in progress?

Yes to therapy so you can let it go.

Tiswa · 08/01/2025 13:45

The Statute of Limitations on assault is 3 years I’m afraid OP so nothing to report to the Police, they simply legally would not investigate given the timeframe

i am so sorry thiugh sounds awful

Differentstarts · 08/01/2025 13:45

I doubt they would do much about it if it happened today so they definitely aren't going to do much about it when it happened 15 years ago

Oreyt · 08/01/2025 13:53

I guess it makes you think where the line stops.

People report SA 30/40 years down the line don't they.

I reckon shouting and regular assault isn't as important though. (Sorry can't think how to word it I know it is)

Ihopeyouhavent · 08/01/2025 14:00

Why would you report it 15 yrs later?

Lwrenn · 08/01/2025 14:01

@Cranberry2020 do you mind if I send you a message?
