What's the weirdest thing a guest in your house has done? (Lighthearted)

DH had a close childhood friend. They were in their early 20s and friend had come over to hang out (just for the evening not to stay over).

DH was still living with his parents at the time and they were all in the living room chatting when friend randomly gets up and announces "right I'm going for a bath" and just goes off and has a bath in their house.

It's such a small thing but so bizarre. What odd habits have you seen from house guests?

FIL came to stay one year for Christmas and brought a can of WD40 with him. He intended to spray all the door hinges so we would not hear them open if he needed to go to the loo in the middle of the night. He was in the annexe - we'd have not heard anything!!

I think this one is quite thoughtful.

peachystormy · 07/01/2025 20:07

@Nibblesetc - the absolute cheek of her!

DecafDodger · 07/01/2025 20:07

It has never occurred to me to take my used sanpro with me, or walk up to host holding it and asking where their outside bins are. Surely that's what bathroom bins are for? Or are they decorative only?

SailingOnAWave · 07/01/2025 20:08

My friend who stayed thought she had full access to the house. This included going through my underwear drawer, opening bathroom doors and wandering into the bedroom when me and hubby were asleep.

MIL refuses to flush the toilet. Instead, she seeks out the most expensive shampoo in the bathroom and pours it down the toilet "to hide the smell". The first time she did it, I had very high maintenance blonde hair and she poured my £20 shampoo down the loo! I have to hide everything from the bathroom before she visits.
Or... you could just press that big silver button at the top of the loo, MIL! 🙄

And the award for the most batshit behaviour goes to no I never poo pass me the olaplex shampoo mother in law

Well, yes but MIL was only 47 when I first knew her. And this was 1991 not 1961.

So she was born in 1944. That's definitely within the age range for those attitudes, especially if she was in any way religious. My parents were born in the Forties, raised by people who were born in the Edwardian era, and they weren't overt; religions...but they were.

LAK89 · 07/01/2025 20:12

Not that weird but my husband's friend's family will be invited for an early lunch then leave after 10PM, even when we had a newborn, asking for something for tea too.

lightsandtunnels · 07/01/2025 20:13

Some of these are hilarious!

DH and I moved into a new large 4 bed house with an en-suite in the main bedroom. DH's friend stayed for the weekend as they had a shared hobby and were having a weekend hobbying! DH showed him round the house.
DH and I were just getting ready for bed in our bedroom when friend walked into the bedroom and strolled into the ensuite with his toothbrush in hand. I was too shocked to say anything at the time and I left the room until he had gone back into the guest room.
DH mentioned it to him the next day and he said he thought that was the only bathroom!

Sprinklesandsprinkles · 07/01/2025 20:16

My friend was over for a playdate, took her kid to the toilet to change their nappy (a 3 year old toddler's poo!). Only by luck of walking past at the right moment did I see that she was using my hand towel as a changing mat, she didn't say anything to me about it so I wouldn't have known I needed to chuck it in the wash after she'd left

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/01/2025 17:36

In a very rural location? I walk a lot late at night (I work late shifts and have to take the dog out when I get home) and looking up at the crystal-clear sky doing 'constellation spotting' is one of the best parts. We never see another soul. That's rural living for you.

He's probably OK; I just have a suspicious mind. Also, you probably wouldn't be thrilled to stumble across a lone man when walking in the dark in the dead of night in a rural area.

Moonshine5 · 07/01/2025 19:51

"another man's woman" ????? Is it the 1900's lol. Did he own her?
Don't you mean he slept naked next to a woman who didn't know him.

🙄

that was meant to read ‘another man’s wife’

See 'walking the dog'. I'm fine, I'm the scariest thing out there!

That is SUCH weird behaviour that I wonder if she's getting some kind of dementia. If she hasn't been declining to flush the loo her entire life, you might want to suggest she goes to the doc.

Iamtired123 · 07/01/2025 20:18

So after reading this thread I've realised I AM the weird guest because I will clean family members bathrooms if they're dirty. I think it's weirder to invite guests over and not clean your bathroom first!

FasilBalti · 07/01/2025 20:19

Gabitule · 07/01/2025 19:38

do you think this was done on purpose? If so, you should have said something! You could have sent both of them a photo of the poo with a very jokey message, enough so the friend who didn’t poo would know that her friend committed the offence, and the poo-er would also realise that the other friend knows.

Or perhaps you think this was a mistake? They lifted their bum in the air so they wouldn’t have to sit on your toilet seat and aimed next to the bowl? But when they did finished, didn’t they wonder where the poo had gone when they saw nothing inside the toilet bowl?

Edited

I've no idea really. Your theory about the hovering poo that missed the bowl is probably the most likely explanation.

Maybe she thought it was a 'ghost' poo that had slid away (if you know what I mean) and that's why it wasn't in the bowl or they assumed it was under the toilet paper? Who knows.

It will remain one of my all time horror stories. I've never told anyone in real life. It's too gross and for some reason I'm embarrassed and it wasn't even me that did it!

The worst bit is that the friend who didn't shit on my floor, if she saw it, will always wonder if it was me or the other girl. She might have shared the story and who can say how many people would have looked at me wondering if I was the culprit.

Well, actually the worst bit was getting rid of it 😷

FasilBalti · 07/01/2025 20:21

The removal went something like this

SpringIscomingalso · 07/01/2025 20:22

A couple I invited couple of times. The wife wanted to make makeover of my furniture arrangement, she said she will clean for me and will talk to my husband for the pay, her husband said we don't own expensive objects and why? I mean, batshit people - all this in 1 bed flat

Heartbreaktuna · 07/01/2025 20:23

MIL visited and "helped" by weeding our garden. What she actually did is dig up and bin all my dormant flower bulbs

MandSCrisps · 07/01/2025 20:24

Georgyporky · 07/01/2025 17:45

A very good friend was staying with me for a long weekend & she offered to cook the full roast dinner I'd planned for Sunday.
On Monday, as she was leaving, she said that the toilet flush was a bit sluggish.
Understatement, it was full of turds & nearly overflowed when I tried flushing again.
The Water Board came quickly, & pointed out that the cause of the blockage was potato & other veg peelings ! This was in the days when you had to pay for the service.
I told her about this, & she said that she'd always done it without any problems !
I could only guess that her flat's on the 2nd floor & the other tenants get the problem.

My MIL also used the toilet as a bin and would stick leftover food down it. It took me ages to train DH out of doing it and to stop her doing it when she came to visit.

What I’ve realised is my MIL was batshit but fairly well behaved when she came to visit (which she hated so they never came). She did used to get up in the middle of the night and open your bedroom door for the ‘air circulation’. Despite me explaining my window was open/it meant I could hear her and FIL snore and it’s just rude!
It’s because she never ever opened her windows and couldn’t understand why anyone would.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/01/2025 11:49

@PrincessAnne4Eva that’s so very weird!
our good friend sometimes gets up at 2.00am ish and goes for a walk. Rather unsettling at first but I’m used to it now 😂
we live rurally and he lives in London so he like to see the stars and hear the owls or something.

Or he's a burglar/murderer.

Tipsssy · 07/01/2025 20:26

My alcoholic MIL came to stay when I had a newborn.

For one of the middle of the night feeds I sat on the edge of our bed - naked - to breast feed only for her to come in sit beside me and shove her face and alcoholic breath right up to my breast to watch the feed.

I was so shocked I never said anything but felt physically violated.

IAmNeverThePerson · 07/01/2025 12:17

My mil does this too, I’ve learnt to roll with it. (And compost as i see fit)

My mil does this too. It's revolting. I had a couple of boiler eggs and black tomatoes stinking my fridge out for a week when she stopped. She brought them over from Spain 🤮

My husband's brother has lived overseas for over 40 years, but came to visit after their mother died. We had lots of issues with him while he was staying with us, but the most unsettling was when he'd left a knife lying on it's 'back' (so the sharp length of the blade was uppermost, iyswim) on the kitchen worktop.
My husband politely asked his brother if he could ensure that it didn't happen again as we had children and didn't want any accidents.
I came home the next day to find every sharp knife we owned lying blade up on the worktop! He'd even found some Blu tack to keep them in place.
He was sent packing!

They need a shocked emoji. I hope he got some mental health help, that is beyond normal strange.

amoreoamicizia · 07/01/2025 20:30

So according to some on this thread, period products are shameful and to be hidden at all costs, and by no means placed in the bathroom bin? No, rather they must be secreted away (but not by one's husband), then smuggled away!

Ladies, it's 2025 and we don't have to be ashamed about periods and period products any more.

Gabitule · 07/01/2025 20:17

You missed the point, you made it sound like the man owns the wife "another man's wife"

Why do you mention the man at all? It was the woman who ended up in bed with a drunk man, her husband is irrelevant.
That's what I was saying. Language is important. Anyways I don't want to derail a brilliant thread.
