New tumble dryer on a budget...condense, heat pump...?

My default was to go for vented, as that is what my ancient (must be getting on for 30 years) dryer is.

I see that very few are available and heat pump is the "new" way forward. Moreeconomical apparently.

I don't dry straight from the washr but often use for finishing things off in the winter.

Any words of wisdom, before I get baffled by a salesperson?

I’ve just bought a beko heat pump one from curry’s. Really pleased with it so far, the water tank is super easy to empty.

We got a cheapie Beko heat pump, was about £300. I love it. It is probably slower than a vented, but senses the weight and humidity of the clothes in the machine so its never on for longer than needed. According to Which?, it is so economical that - if you use it once a week - it pays for itself within a year compared to vented. Have had it 2 years, use it 4 times a week, no problems.

If you’re not using it for super long cycles I’d just go for the cheapest condenser you can. That’s what we’ve done for the same reason. I can’t remember what ours was but it was about £250 from AO.

Where is the dryer, heat pumps don't work well in cold places like garages and unheated rooms

woodymumoftwo · 07/01/2025 07:34

I bought a Beko condenser dryer. It's been a lifesaver. Drys really quickly. It's amazing how much water comes off your clothes. The drawer is easy to empty. Ours is in a room off the kitchen there's no heating in there so quite cold in the winter mths, the dryer doesn't cause any condensation etc.

CoffeeINeedCoffee · 07/01/2025 11:02

I'm looking too but vented all the way here.

caramac04 · 07/01/2025 11:22

Love my heat pump, very cheap to run but it does take longer. We’re a small household of 3 adults so it’s not an issue but when I worked full time and there were 6 of us I would have had to be more organised. I used to wash, dry and iron most of Saturday but that wouldn’t work with my average load (mostly cotton/sweat type fabrics) now. I do peg out on good drying days.

Floralnomad · 07/01/2025 11:24

We’ve got a Bosch condenser and I’m very happy with it , it dries really quickly .

BourbonsAreOverated · 07/01/2025 11:26

I’ve got a heat pump. Takes ages to dry (it’s probably 7-8 years old now) but look at the running costs of them on AO. When I got ours you could see on our electric use graph the drop.

BertieBotts · 07/01/2025 11:33

If you only use for finishing off, vented might be better? They are faster, do use more electricity but if you're only doing part of a cycle then maybe doesn't matter so much.

I love my heat pump dryer but I never hang things up unless they can't go in it. I got it to reduce the amount of time I spent hanging and taking things down so to me it would defeat the point to do half and half.

Mine takes about 90 mins to dry a full load from my washing machine, which is 7/8kg (can't remember).

I have a Beko and the price was good.

We have a Beko condenser, one of their cheaper ones but works well and stops when the clothes are dry to the setting selected. It's an a cold outhouse but we connected it to the same drain pipe the washing machine uses so don't even have to empty the tank. I know they are high on electric use but much better for us than filling our very small house with damp clothes.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/01/2025 11:44

Personally in your situation I’d look on local gumtree and Facebook for a condenser

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/01/2025 11:52

I’m watching this thread as our dryer hasn’t been used since it had a burning smell coming from it. It was from the Indesit ones that would light up the house and burn it down for you. We had it fixed by an engineer and there’s no fluff in the vent, so it’s been sat in the laundry room looking rather sad and pathetic.

Allnewtometoo · 08/01/2025 18:33

Thanks all. I did worry the heat pump ones would take ages, like the newer washers often do. I'm going to haveva look at what I can get for my budget.

Just bought a candy condenser WiFi enabled after our vented one gave up. Love it and won't be going back! So easy to empty the filter and the water tray.

supercalifragilistic123 · 08/01/2025 20:31

Heat pump all the way! Other dryers make your clothes crispy, plus they are far more economical to run.

We just bought a new Samsung one, but I actually prefer the Beko one we had before, it lasted 8 years of heavy use before it died.

Michellesbackbrace · 08/01/2025 20:47

I love my condenser dryer will never go back to vented. It’s a beko large capacity one, and the only one I’ve ever had that seems to not finish until clothes are totally dry, in the past other ones I had the clothes would still be damp and I’ve had a few where the clothes smelt musty too.
