Mould and damp at home any advice?

I am having a lot of mould at my home.
We had someone come out to take a look at things and he used a device and said the ceiling temp was 10 degrees
Is this lower than it should be ?
What should it be ?

First you have to work out where the damp is coming from. Gutters, leaky roof or chimney, leaking drains, leaking pipes, soil level higher than doc, cracked render? Is moisture generated within the house. Showers, baths, cooking, drying laundry?
Try and eliminate the source of damp, fit high powered extractor fans in kitchen and bathrooms, heat the house sufficiently, don’t dry washing inside.

He was probably estimating the dew point - the temperature at which moisture is released from the air, giving rise to damp and mould on surfaces.

"The ideal dew point for a house is between 39°F and 62°F (4°C and 16.5°C)."

In general, when warm air hits a cold surface, moisture is released. I've found the best solution to damp is lots of ventilation. Trickle vents on windows and above doors can help a lot.

Dehumidifier?

Istilldontlikeolives · 06/01/2025 21:35

Dehumidifier (electric plug in like meaco), open windows every day, dont dry clothes inside, window open when cooking, wipe bathroom down after showers and baths (boring I know but a window vac makes it more entertaining), keep things away from walls… its tedious but these will help. You just need to be on it all the time. Of course there may be structural reasons but try doing all of this. Did he not make any other suggestions?

Yes 10 degrees is cold for a ceiling. Is it insulated?

Portakalkedi · 06/01/2025 21:37

Identify the source, make sure to open ALL windows every day to get fresh air in for at least 10 minutes, and get a dehumidifier.

He said the loft is not insulated
Could this cause the cold and mould ?
