Eloping, not changing name...then what?

My partner and I are going to elope, we don't plan on really telling anyone - it is purely for us and I suppose for legal protection should anything happen to either of us. I don't plan to change my name.

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but what happens then or rather what do I/we need to do? Do we have to let work, banks etc know? Anyone any experience?

No, I don't think I let anyone "official" know in terms of banks etc.

I didn’t change my name, no I don’t think I needed to let anyone know…maybe HMRC if it affects tax?

Do married partners have any extra benefits at your employment (for example pensions etc?)
You might need to redo your will.

Germanjio · 06/01/2025 20:58

If you have wills? They'll not be valid any more.

I can't think of anything else?

Pottydrivinguspot · 06/01/2025 20:58

I did nothing!

Tell:
your employer
HMRC
Pensions
Insurance policies (home, car etc)
Life insurance

And rewrite your wills - which can be done before "in anticipation"

skybluestar · 06/01/2025 23:20

Thanks everyone!

Yes, otherwise, forget all about it as we did, to the point where I accidentally let out something about insurance and marriage about five years later, having forgotten we hadn’t told anyone.

Why isn't your will valid? A married person can surely leave their own property to who they want.

The will is automatically cancelled on marriage. You can each write a new will exactly the same as the old if you wish, but dated after the marriage, or if dated before, include the required wording “in contemplation of marriage” so it won’t be cancelled,
