Did you lose weight by cutting out Coke Zero?

I am ashamed to admit that I drink waaaaaay too much Coke Zero (5/6 can per day) and I'm unsure whether it's the cause of my weight gain. So my question is ... although it's calorie free can it keep you fat/ stop you losing weight?

There have been studies on this (don’t have links) that say drinking liquids with sweeteners cause weight gain in the same way as sugary drinks. It could be the case.

TotallyTwisted · 06/01/2025 17:14

6 cans a day?!! 😱 Yes, it is bad for you because of the sweeteners, you need to go cold turkey on it, it's the only way. I never drink anything with sweeteners in it.

Ridingthegravytrain · 06/01/2025 17:17

I think so. Isn't it something to do with certain sugar free sweeteners still having a glycemic index and affecting your body and how it stores fat or something and only sweeteners like stevia and erythritol are truly zero GI

It's so terrible when I see it written down. But I've been cutting back the last few days by only having 1 with my dinner. I'm drinking sparkling water instead with a splash of dilute juice in the hope that it's a bit better

Yes I think I heard that

I’m just stopping a zero cola now. Second time I’ve gone cold turkey. I’ll let you know.

If you want to give it up, I’ve found drinking 2L water a day from a sucky bottle has done the trick at reducing cravings. I did that and found I wasn’t ‘thirsty’ in the usual way at all.

Pickingmyselfup · 06/01/2025 17:21

I drink one can a day on average and haven't had any issues with weight loss but that is very different to five or six I suppose.

Rowena191 · 06/01/2025 17:23

This is very interesting. I drink diet drinks too. Please come back and let us know what the effect has been on your weight!

Michellesbackbrace · 06/01/2025 17:24

How can it make you put on weight when it’s zero calories? I actually lost weight when I was drinking several cans a day as the sweetness gave me a sugar fix but no fat/sugar. I found the bubbles filled me up too.

What are you eating? Do you track calories etc?

devilspawn · 06/01/2025 17:34

Not in and of itself.

I lost plenty of weight still drinking it.

However, what I found it did do was 1) make me crave bad things with it, like crisps and sweets and more significantly 2) made me drink less plain water which does stop hunger pangs and cravings, so overall I always felt hungrier vs just drinking plain water.

Ladyofthepond · 06/01/2025 17:42

It has no calories so has no affect on weight gain, me and my partner drink an ungodly amount of diet coke/pepsi max and we're both slim (and yes we both admit it's our vice, our lifestyles are very healthy in all other aspects, we don't even drink!).

My weight has however fluctuated, which has always been due to the amount of food I consume. I know for some that diet drinks can cause an increase in the consumption of processed food, also for a lot of people they consume them when eating i.e at restaurants/meal deals etc.

With your weight gain has that been short/long term, and are there any other lifestyle factors e.g change in job, menopause that could be part of it?

Winterskyfall · 06/01/2025 17:46

From what I know the reason people say it makes you lose weight is because when you drink a sweet drink your body expects calories and when it doesn't get them, it still wants them because it was "told" by the taste buds they were coming. I'd try go cold turkey and see how it goes. Also 6 cans a day is way too much, my mother got ringing in the ears from drinking too many diet drinks, they aren't good for you. When she stopped the ringing stopped.

Darkdiamond · 06/01/2025 17:53

I used to drink it by the bucket load and cut down to 1 can a day when pregnant. Now when I drink it I have a weird feverish feeling and it's like my body is rejecting it. I drink copious amounts of water now but was probably slimmer when I was on diet coke tbh. I probably had a less healthy diet overall back then though and while I was thinner, I wasn't well nourished. I'm much better fed now and never restrict myself like I did in my DC days and that's probably the cause. However, I survived on it for years at my slimmest but also smoked and drank black coffee around the clock too.

That is not true.

I don't think cutting out Coke Zero alone would do much, you'd need to combine with other measures like calorie counting/exercise/drinking more water. It isn't great for your health but I really doubt diet drinks are the reason most people are overweight (particularly if you're obese or significantly overweight).

Shubbypubby · 06/01/2025 21:09

@Darkdiamond yep at my thinnest, I drank black coffee, diet drinks, smoked loads and took drugs 🤣Just because something isn't fattening doesn't mean it's good for you.

Attictroll · 06/01/2025 21:26

Counted calories - drank loads of Coke Zero lost loads of weight 😂
Cut it out now and weight stable

snoopysnoooper · 06/01/2025 21:33

I have lost 2st over the past 18 months, mainly by reducing carbs and sugar plus fasting. I started allowing myself a can of Diet Coke a day but found my weight plateaued for ages then as soon as I cut it out I started losing again. I couldn't believe it as I was previously skeptical of the whole 'artificial sweeteners cause you to gain weight' thing.

namechangeGOT · 06/01/2025 21:36

I've lost & maintained hell of a lot of weight drinking the same if not more Coke Zero than you. I love the stuff, I barely drink and I don't smoke. It's my one vice. I refuse to give it up!

Happyholidays78 · 06/01/2025 21:42

I love Pepsi max & drink 1-2 cans a day. I stopped drinking it for about 6 weeks & it made no difference to my weight at all. I was drinking more water/squash & thought my skin looked a bit better so that's a positive.
