That’s horrible

Waterweight · 06/01/2025 15:53

Just came across it - apparently it's from a case that happened in 2017 so not recent but how terrible for both women involved.

No idea if this news story is legit or not, but it is logical if one starts from the premise that women are not people, they are property owned by men, as appears to often be the case in sharia law as practised. One man has damaged another man’s property, therefore the victim ‘gets even’ by damaging the perpetrator’s equivalent property in the same way. It is revenge-based ‘justice’: if you smash my TV I will smash your TV. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. And women, well, it’s not like they are actually people after all…

anniegun · 06/01/2025 16:24

Its the Daily Mail so not an accurate source for news

anniegun · 06/01/2025 16:27

In a Christian country they make a rapist their president. Would not want that culture coming here

CurlewKate · 06/01/2025 16:45

I would need another source that isn't the Mail, but there is a lot of misogyny in Sharia law. As far as I am aware, the only element of Shaira law that can be used in the UK is around divorce and only if both couples choose it. There are awful things happening to women in some countries.

I’ve just googled this and the article comes up in the BBC from 2017. It’s truly horrific.

ACatNamedRobin · 06/01/2025 17:12

That's absolutely horrendous. But yes sharia law ..

Phobiaphobic · 06/01/2025 17:38

I found the BBC link. I think it needs to be made clear that this barbarism did not happen in the UK. It is not clear from the OP's screenshot (which is very blurry, but that might be my phone) that this is not the case. Not sure why they didn't post a link.

Absolutely disgusting. I feel so angry for those poor girls.

The tweet in the screenshot starts with "Pakistan: ...", It was clear enough to me, I'm sure it will be clear enough to others.

Yes, when I look closely I can see that now, but it is fuzzy and not as clear as the headline from the Daily Mail to me. I am not the only poster who wasn't initially sure whether this terrible crime was in the UK or not. Eta: I think I am, actually! I misread what another poster wrote.

FOJN · 06/01/2025 18:03

Members of the council were arrested for this. It's not acceptable or legal in Pakistan.

Thank you for posting this. I remember reading about this horrific case at the time. It was newsworthy across the world because it was so extreme and awful. All the men involved in the council and the rapes were arrested, and the victims and the other women in their families were taken to women’s refuges

I wonder what the op’s reasons are for posting this now?

I wondered, especially in the current climate.

The BBC article gives a lot more detail than OP:

While some reports say the group that ordered the rape was a jirga - or village council - BBC sources said it was actually formed by members of the two families.

Jirgas, a kind of council formed of local elders, often settle disputes in rural Pakistan. However, they are illegal and have been condemned for a series of controversial rulings - including ordering so-called "honour killings" and past incidents of "revenge rape".

dcbgr · 06/01/2025 18:17

I am more shocked and disgusted by Phobiaphobics post that in the UK our justice system says white girls suffer less from sexual abuse than Asian girls. Other countries, other cultures, other legal systems but in the UK to say that if you abuse white girls your punishment is less is beyond disgusting. How did we get to this place? No justice, no peace.

I've been ruminating over whether motive matters the last few days and I'm not sure that it does but I do appreciate full facts and accuracy.

There are awful things happening to women and girls in THIS country.

Yeah I don't know why it came out blurry & I was looking for more info but the original screenshot says pakistan & I've since dated the story to 2017 as mentioned above.
having not heard it before I was quite shocked by it

Hi. OP here - just came across it as a snipit from another sight & was quite shocked having not seen it the first time around (have since looked further & it was a couple of years ago but not easily findable)

I think subconsciously I do wonder what happened to the women themselves & hope they're doing so much better now

It is shocking, but the screenshot makes it seem as though the rape was "legal" in Pakistan. But the truth is those involved were arrested, I think,? I doubt the motives of the tweeter tbh.

Eta: I think I was mixing up two different cases, hence the edit.
