What Little Greene paint to go with my ugly carpet

I’m redecorating my large, dark hallway and trying to find the right colour is driving me insane. It has a beige carpet with a pinkish taupey tone which I bloody hate but can’t afford to replace. I think it needs to be an off white because the space is so dark. Brilliant white is too stark and not keen on blues or greys.

I thought Silent White 329 was a safe bet but after putting a tester on the wall I’m not so sure. It has a yellowish tint which I’m worried will make the carpet look pinker? I’ve read conflicting things.

I’ve included some photos of it in daylight and artificial light. The square patch is silent white on the wall with a silent white swatch above it. I’ve been considering slaked lime which is in the middle of the pic of the three swatches.

Has to be LG as it’s very low odour and strong smells are migraine trigger.

Any advice is appreciated, I’m on the verge of giving up!

Nice cat!
How about a light sage or olive green?
It'll still be a dark hall whatever colour you paint it so maybe go for some colour?

MoMandaS · 06/01/2025 12:56

Have you considered painting the woodwork a dark/bright colour that complements the carpet, then choosing a white/pale colour for the walls that tones with that?

SizzlingPrickle · 06/01/2025 12:56

I like Slaked Lime from LG. Lick paints are also low odour, their white 03 is a lovely colour too.

Have you had a quote for replacing the carpet in the hall though, it might not be as expensive as you think?

I'd look at either doing a warm light neutral throughout, or like a previous poster said - a warm lighter neutral on the walls and a bolder colour on the woodwork. Something like Masquerade could work.

The carpet looks fine to me, and I'm quite picky! Also, have you considered your lighting? Warm white bulbs instead of cool / daylight. And can you add a lamp or two? I agree that you have to work with the dark.

I love green, especially 'book room green', but the lounge and bedroom are already a shade of green (Dulux Tranquil Dawn) so it might look a bit OTT. If I were planning to stay here a long time then I'd just go for it, but I want to sell in the next couple of years so I'm thinking neutral is probably safer.

I have indeed considered the lighting and that's another thing that's driven me to the brink of insanity the current spotlights are too warm and orange toned, they've been annoying me since I put them in. They're 2700k in warm white. I've ordered some 3000k instead which will hopefully improve things. It doesn't help there's only four, which isn't enough for the size of the room.

Not sure about doing the woodwork, it will take all I've got to paint the walls!

Green will probably make the carpet look pinker too. You need to look for a white with a warm pinky under tone and then the carpet will look brown/beige in comparison.

How about shirting, flint or hollyhock?

I considered Flint but I've been looking at colours on Plan-Home and in a darkish room it looked grey. Shirting is too white and hollyhock is too beige.

Another low odour option is Tikkurila which have LOADS of colours, and most of their off whites and creams have red undertones. They also do colour matching. Unfortunately they don't stock it near me, so I'd have to either take a chance based on a colour card or order testers at £5 a go.

I have similar carpet and our walls are Dulux Timeless eggshell with the woodwork and ceiling in Brilliant White (to show that the walls are not white-white) - I'm not sure what the Little Green match for Timeless is, but looks a lot like Loft White on the website?

Xiaoxiong · 06/01/2025 14:08

Tikkurila Paper F497 looks like a no-undertone white as well.

GreatPlumPlayer · 06/01/2025 14:10

The paint from Valspar V&Co is matte and low odour, very easy to apply, I found it better than little greene, and cheaper. You can colour match to any colour too, Farrow & Ball, Little Greene etc.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 06/01/2025 14:11

What's the cats name?

TheFlyingHorse · 06/01/2025 14:26

We've got LG Portland Stone in our hall and in other areas of the house. It comes in different shades and we've chosen a darker shade for our hallway and lighter shades elsewhere.

How long ago did you use it? I looked at Valspar but recent reviews say the formula has changed and it's awful to paint with now.

@Dontlletmedownbruce Kasper. He'd colour match to F&B Downpipe I think.

In the last few months. It’s their new sub brand which is called V&CO - super matte. I can’t do with high fume paint either.

Paintinsanity · 07/01/2025 23:55

I’ve spoken to a live chat person at Little Greene and she thinks silent white or anything else yellow toned will clash with the carpet. She recommended green so I’m thinking of embracing the darkness and going for it, but I can’t decide which one.

Top to bottom:

Tracery
Green stone light
Book room green
Green stone

Any thoughts? Smile

Kasper is beautiful! Gorgeous eyes. I am useless with choosing paint so can't help. I love your cat.

SinnerBoy · 08/01/2025 05:28

Kasper is not usually camera shy! I'm sorry, I have no ideas re paint.

Itsallgonesideways · 08/01/2025 06:03

Green stone light is ideal as it's the lightest of the paint shades.

It's no use trying to be incognito with Kasper around

@Itsallgonesideways green stone light was the one I was gravitating towards.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I will leave this developing scene here for the Kasper admirers.

You will have to try a larger swatch insitu to choose your paint colour.
The actual lighting and carpet colour have a huge influence on how colour is perceived. It is impossible to guess.
I would use an offwhite ( for neutrality and brightness) with either a green or pink undertone, depending on which way you prefer to go. Change your light bulbs before swatching.
